If your not in a hurry, you might want to wait until around mid April, FCS is due for an update.

Personally I could care less about Blu-Ray right now, what i do care about is rendering a 1 hour timeline in less than 3-4 hours utilizing more than 1 1/2 processors to do it. Especially when I pay a premium for an 8 core machine.

The main reason Blu-Ray hasn’t made it to Mac yet is licensing, which BluRay just made a lot more simple and cheaper. That said Apple didn’t announce any new Drives with the Mac Pros last week.
I would expect a 64bit FCS, Motion, Compressor and so on along with an all new written FCP in cocoa and not another carbon version. With only a 2% gain over the latest MacPro’s are not enough to justify upgrading unless FCS is updated to run more than 2 processors.

After looking at Apple’s own performance comparisons for Video between the new 8-core 2.9 vs the 8- 3.2 with only minimal gain I can’t see how they can justify the huge spike in price for the top dawg machine. Hopefully this means a totally revamped FCS3 coming soon (April). The video market has got to be their biggest market for Mac Pros.

First-Get a professional Waveform Monitor from Leader or Tektronics, I’ve heard people using Veescope Software via a PC to do their color measurements and works.
Second- I would be looking at the Vectorscope and not the Histogram that’s what engineers go off of to measure color and has the correct targets that will tell you if your are exceeding legal levels or not.
Check the settings on your broadcast safe filter, I’m not sure how Vegas operates but there should be some control settings that will allow you change how far to limit your colors and luminance levels.

Ran into the same problem but without opening FCP at the same time. Went to set up the source and codec and pressed ok and goes back to Uncompressed 8bit. Found out that after I reset the capture destination in Preferences and press ok it then recognizes the codec change that I made. This is all with VTR Exchange v4 I might add, called AJA and they suggested going back to v3.

To my understanding yes. Editing Software inorder to conserve resources don’t sample every line of video. Who are you sending the video to? You should be fine, unless you are dealing with a larger network like Discover, HBO and so on.

I don’t know what you are using for your scopes. looks like an editing program’s internal scope. If so most of them take a sample of the video and are not truly accurate. FCP does this to me after applying a filter in the vector scope. You should be fine as long as you applied your filters. We have only had 1 tape sent back to us in the past 4 years and that was because the deck was out of alignment. If your are working with a Major network I would recommend a high grade vector scope from Tektronix or leader.
