Biggest Advantage is the ProRes codec.

You can open older projects in newer versions of fcp.

[Randolph Harrison] “what are the big advantages?”

    ProRes 422 codec.
    AVCHD support
    XDCAM EX support
    RED support

[Randolph Harrison] “And could I still open projects that were created in 5.1?”

Absolutely. Forwards compatible…yes. Backwards compatible (open FCP 6 project in FCP 5.1.4)…no.

BUT WAIT! New FCP coming soon…if history holds true. Every two years around mid-late April, new versions are released.

One other feature I think make the upgrade worth it is auto-conforming timelines with the 1st clip place.

If your not in a hurry, you might want to wait until around mid April, FCS is due for an update.
