There is no way at present to preview HDV footage on your timeline via firewire. I use the PNY540 graphics card with HD breakout box to preview timeline via overlay. With AspectHD much is in realtime so you don’t need to render to see your effects on a HD monitor.

  • Sounds like you’ve got a technical problem which is probably hardware related. I trust that you have two drives in your system – one for software and the other for AV use. If not, get a second drive and install XP fresh followed by PP1.51. If that doesn’t remedy the problem, it’s either your RAM, Motherboard or processor. The only way to solve this is by the old tried and proven method of swapping each component out until you find what is faulty. Tedious but thorough.

Barry, any idea of price and capacity? Without this option the HVX200 is going to be a hard sell for many applications.

The Citidisk is perfect for use with the Sony Z1/FX1 HDV cameras. I doubt it’ll handle the bandwidth required for DVCPRO HD in its current configuration though.

  • I see the original poster has not bothered to respond. Maybe he’s just a FCP fan who’s stirring here in the PP forum. If anybody needs assurances that software does not maketh the man (or woman) just think back to the days when there was no editing software and we edited on linear systems, or on flatbeds. Give a real editor a box of well-shot tapes and two Betacam video machines and you’ll get a “professional looking” edited programme at the end, albeit with no effects and titles! Give the same editor a box of absolute crappy footage and any modern NLE software available for $ 50 up, and you’ll get an effects-laden MTV-style work of art. A bad editor would achieve neither result.

  • I say we club together and erect a shrine to Jan. I’d suggest a bronze effigy with her cradling the camera in her arms. Panasonic fans could make yearly pilgrimages to the shrine based on the actual release date of the camera, and leave offerings of old outdated 4GB and 8 GB P2 cards.

[jeremiah black] “Panasonic owns the prosumer market. Have a little faith that they’re gonna make it work for people like us.”

Heh, heh. No matter how you look at it, if you’re used to uninterrupted filming of an hour or so at a time, then P2 is unsuitable at present. Buy a Sony Z1.

  • You guys are missing the point. Panasonic want to sell you a handful of expensive proprietory P2 cards. Sure no cheap HDD will slot in and work like a P2. The markup on the P2 cards is factored into the profit from peripherals which are necessary to operate the camera. Maximising profit is why companies are in business – Pannie may take a hit on the actual camera to appear competetive but will make it up on the cards

April 4, 2005 at 7:11 pm in reply to: NO p2 for me! Forget it!

I agree that something like P2 may well be the future – but in the here and now it’s going to be a hard sell with XDCAM already established and XDCAM-HD in the offing. These format wars are really exhausting. I remember attending a Panasonic pre-release promo on DV. They said that DV would be standard for all manufacturers – then they went and produced DVCPro! Wouldn’t it be great for consumers if manufacturers attempted to work together for a change to produce a format which suits the end-users needs? Year after year we have to endure the hype surrounding the next “amazing” format. Some of us buy in, with decks, camera’s, accessories. A year or so down the line the stuffs obsolete. Time to buy again…

  • I think the Panasonic rep at a recent demo quoted around $ 3000 for the 60GB device! P2 is definitely not aimed at budget-conscious independent filmmakers – but rather at news corporations and broadcasters with pots of money for all of these “optional” accessories. No matter how Panasonic spin this, P2 is an expensive format, and will remain so for at least another two years.
