800kbs is ok for SD but not really good for a 1280×720(960×720) frame size, i’d expect greater than 2000kbs then you should get better results. Turn Keyframes on automatic in QT h.264, i dont know why it defaults to every 24f..? and go to a multipass render in your final render, you can do single pass to check your compression output to make sure you are in the ballpark.

What is your target data rate for the file?

  • Interpret the footage in AE to remove the pulldown, or use another program. make it progressive then you should be fine.. or you can blur the image a little..

The fun part of hd is about to begin. 50i is essentially 25p if there are no differing field’s. If you have a progressive tape in hd you can change the framerate 23.98/24/25/29.97/30 but it changes the run time, pitch corrupts the vitc etc. 25->23.98 you just have to do the math its about 4.1%. You would probably have more issues if they did a hd standards conversion through a teranex but the run time would be good. i’d be careful about the lingo, PAL is PAL, its a standard for SD the same as NTSC. HD is neither NTSC or PAL, HD is HD no matter what the framerate or where its being played. I hear this daily, i want a PAL D5, i can easily make a SD PAL D5, then i get oh no i want a 1080 50i and thats completely different..

the difference is 4.1% on a slowpal conversion which is basically what you got. Increase the speed by 4.1% thats it..

Cool!! SD is easy but remember when it was hard for you, HD is really not that hard either its just real particular. Seems like just about every problem i’ve had theres always been a simple solution. but even for me the problem sometimes is hard to see when you are buried in menus and settings etc..

sorry i had to ask.. i have a few older mb’s that are sd only.. the problem is generally quite simple and usually obvious.. if the deck is outputting “x” video the capture device needs to set to “x”. I have to admit a few times the 60f vs 59.94f has got me because i got comfortable(ok lazy).

the mb should auto detect the SD/HDSDI signal so i’d say look at your nle’s cature settings and maybe dont believe the “easy setups” .

is your vtr ref locked and happy?
is your easy setup correct or just close(close doesnt work)?
is your easy setup looking at the bm mb for hd..?

you are always one dominoe away from making them all fall together..

check yourplayback and capture setting’s and make sure all is in order. you will get no signal lets say if your camera is outputting HDSDI @ 60f and your capture is at 59.94f, the card will just not lock to the signal.. its a shot in the dark..

not sure about the input but keep in mind that photo jpeg is a single threaded encoder meaning that no matter how fast your computer is you will not get decent off tape encodes.. in sd its great but hd has too much data and you just get bad encodes..
