Pro Rez codec will result in a smaller file size over MJpeg. But i’ve never done testing on compressing a compressed source to pro rez, i do know that from full uncompressed pro rez just rocks, but on that note NO pc will decode prorez codec. I know app’s are being optimized to work with pro rez (like color) so if you are going to do any grading it might be worth it in the long run. I’d suggest to do some test’s and compare. ProRez does require a fast mac though(Intel) for real time playback/record..

we’ve had the BM work group hub for a couple of years now and it works good for routing HDSDI/SDSDI w/422 around fine. I warn you though the power adapter that plugs into the router overheats and expands causing the router to turn on and off. We just soldered the power on to the board, problem solved(late night emergency engineering). As with the ProRez, its an awesome codec i compared it against 10bit uncompressed and there is no difference, but.. you’ll need fast macs (intel quads) to compress on the capture and no PC will decode the files as of yet.

    hope this helps.

    btw we’re running 2-d5’s, HDcamSR, 4 DBeta (NTSC/PAL) and 3 Mac G5 (I need new comp’s)

Mjpeg i believe is optimized for interlace, it might just be doing a poor job at rendering. The photo jpeg is a better format and doesn’t chew up as much data rate typically. Mjpeg is a CBR codec at about 67mb/s for SD whereas PJpeg only uses whats needed.

I’ve seen that gamma shift for years and asked our engineer, she said it was probably the way the compressed image renders on a still frame (averages up in chroma). dont hold your breath waiting for BM to fix the bug, ive been waiting for years for BM to fix the A to D (yrb) side if thier multibridge. In NTSC they have the SMPTE and Betacam levels flipped so you CAN NOT dail a proper component signal out of it, Ironically PAL is Fine.

You Need Intel Chip’s in your Mac, the old g5 aren’t fast enough. We did a test on a Quad G5 and the capture to ProRez ran the procs up to 95% (all of them). You could get the AJA io and have it do the “ProRez’in” for you..
