i would even think it would be slower than just 2 solid drives raided together. theres only one guy writing in the drive and you are going to make him run all over the place. typically you group your raid set first then you group your multiple raid sets together. group your cows and then add them to your other set of cows..

press “apple” k, then type the shared name of a mac on the network then add (.local). ie smothies_mac.local, login with the admin password and check the remember password. all volumes should display. then just create a short cut to the drive.. pc to mac though i’ve only gotten to the users space not the disks..

in reference to the tape format.. a good dvcam with sdi input will rival a beta sp. beta sp is theoretically better but they suffer from analog drop outs etc. in my tests with a dvcam dsr2000 up against the beta bvw75 and the dvcam was more favorable..i have seen poor quality dvcams dubs but i think sony nailed it in the dsr2000..

I agree with matt.. AJA is a more rock solid product, but BM does offer one thing, ok two.. 1 VANC encoding and a way of manufacturing inexpensive under engineered products. you get what you pay for. But the VANC is very cool, i’ll give them that..

apple and microsoft have different “camps” of thinking. apple encodes its video with a gamma of 1.8 whereas ms does 2.2. if you dont watch and tell the encoder what the input gamma level is you video will not get “apples in apples out” encode. no pun intended. basically the color in the video usually gets darker and crushes your detail in the low to mid black detail..

Rhozet can do this(at least the Beta we are running).. but its expensive 5g’s for one licence and you need to by the PC..

Intel mac or G5? i ask because a new intel mac will do prorez which is much less demanding on disks but you need a lot of processors on board to compress on the fly, a g5 wont cut it.. Uncompressed 720p is rather demanding on data 160MB/s or so. maybe defrag the drive. if you get enough open pasture to write the data, you might survive..?

The issue is that all AVI codecs aren’t availiable to QT, so to decompress you’d have to use a PC(with the codecs) to convert to QT. Then comes the gamma headache of the conversion Mac 1.8 pc 2.2. But to generate a prorez qt(which can ONLY be done on a mac) you’d then convert it via qt on the mac. Simple but a multistep process..
