    It should be automatic.

    What’s happening?

Actually, I don’t know why, but there is a difference. PC-created PSDs don’t import with layers. Any PC-originated file has to be opened up and re-saved in Photoshop on a Mac to import with layers.

To be more precise, that should read “Log and Batch Capture”.

I hope you mis-read that, Bret.

No professional working editor I know uses Capture Now unless they for whatever reason don’t care about timecode and/or do not intend to ever need to recapture from the original tapes.

Capture Now allows too many timecode errors through and can mess up a recapture somethin’ fierce, for starters.

Log and Capture is the way most professionals I know work.

Also, did you try taking out the new RAM and seeing if the problem clears up?

Does the Escape key work under any other circumstances? Is the physical key malfunctioning, or do you think it’s not communicating properly with FCP? If it’s the key itself, it might be time to replace the keyboard.

Try logging and then Batch Capturing your footage instead. Then you’ll have no need to use the Escape key.

Capture Now should really only be used under extreme circumstances. It isn’t a reliable capture method.

I’m betting they’ve been burned by others not sending them something they need and they know if they have the entire project and all the media, that means they can go back in and get what they need without having to go back to the editor and wait until the editor has time.

It’s not a usual request. Pros don’t usually have to worry about that kind of thing, but it can happen.

If you go this route, MAKE SURE you eject the laptop from the desktop and power down before you unplug the FW cable between machines.

A disk with a system on it can get scrambled pretty bad if it is disconnected while still mounted. Powering down is just my own added super-cautiousness.

I had my laptop in target mode attached to my desktop and the cable was accidentally pulled by a curious kitten. My laptop refused to boot after that. I’m not sure what my technogeek did to get it back, but it was a miserable couple of hours waiting while he sprinkled magic geek dust on it.

Now I only use target mode under extreme circumstances.

Or just use the Nest command and put all the stills in one “container” that you can then adjust as one clip.
