  • PSD files importing as flattened image, not layers

Posted by Brian Pitt on March 28, 2007 at 3:21 pm

I have NEVER had this problem before. I am trying to import a layered PSD file, but it keeps coming in as a single image, not as layers. I’m sure there is a simple solution, but I can’t figure it out. ugh…..any help?

Hmmm…I originally created the graphic on a PC. I think that was the problem. I re-did it on a mac and everything is working now.

    Brian,
It shouldn;t be any difference if the files come from a PC or a Mac. make sure that the files RGB and not CMYK, otherwise FC can not interprete them.
    Cheers,

Actually, I don’t know why, but there is a difference. PC-created PSDs don’t import with layers. Any PC-originated file has to be opened up and re-saved in Photoshop on a Mac to import with layers.

I experience the same problem running FCP 5.1.4 on Intel Macs. Unfortunately not all my Macs have Photoshop. If anyone knows of a workaround it would be appreciated.

    Hi All,
long time reader, first post, so if i do something terribly noob-ish, please don’t flame me…

i have been having this problem for a couple of days now and i think i might have something else you might want to try if you haven’t already.

open the FCP project you need to import your psd’s into.

    select your sequence

    go to sequence – settings

go to the video rendering tab

    select ‘render as 8-bit YUV’

import your 8 bit RGB psd’s that were not working. FCP will think about it for a bit and then you should see the psd’s in your browser as sequences instead of stills

i’d love to know if this helps. it seems to have worked for me…

i think i may have spoken too soon! as well as left out another detail…

before i did what i described in my last post i repaired the permissions on my system drive with the disk utility. not sure if it’s relevant, but you never know.

now what i am getting is that i can open the psd sequences as nests, but they are coming in at the wrong timebase! they are coming in as 25fps, when i need them to come in at 29.97… very strange… i’ll keep trying…
