My ESC isn’t working during capture
Posted by Diana O’gilvie on March 24, 2007 at 1:18 amI’ve been capturing some footage and my ESC key quit on me. I am working on FCP3 (poor student can’t afford the upgrade!) I have tried force quitting but to no avail, it not stopping the footage at all. Any tips in testing the key to make sure it works? Can I fix a setting in FCP to make it work?

March 24, 2007 at 2:01 pmDoes the Escape key work under any other circumstances? Is the physical key malfunctioning, or do you think it’s not communicating properly with FCP? If it’s the key itself, it might be time to replace the keyboard.
Try logging and then Batch Capturing your footage instead. Then you’ll have no need to use the Escape key.
Capture Now should really only be used under extreme circumstances. It isn’t a reliable capture method.

March 24, 2007 at 3:31 pmHave you been cruising the web on your computer while your capturing? (this is something the G5’s and Intels have the power to do) If you use another application while capturing and then try to get back to FCP to stop the capture, the escape key does not always respond as it should.
command tab back to FCP and then hit the escapte key to stop the capture. -

What kind of bizarre comment is that? This is a very common and standard way of capturing video on any nle. Without it, many type of production would just be ridiculous. It is a completely reliable capture method. How odd of you to say that.

March 25, 2007 at 4:02 amIf you’re running version 3 there’s no telling what could be wrong. What OS are you running? 9 or X? IF X you should probably be running jaguar max and something like QT 5. But if you’ve been updating the OS and QT, while leaving FCP (an app completely reliant on QT and the OS) at version 3, you’re in for trouble.

No professional working editor I know uses Capture Now unless they for whatever reason don’t care about timecode and/or do not intend to ever need to recapture from the original tapes.
Capture Now allows too many timecode errors through and can mess up a recapture somethin’ fierce, for starters.
Log and Capture is the way most professionals I know work.
