It’s not the CPU. It’s the bottleneck of FW.
You’re basically trying to cram three video files through one firewire bus. If that’s not a recipe for throughput problems, I don’t know what is.
Try installing another internal SATA drive in your G5 to use as a media drive. You have the slot in that G5, may as well use it!
Use the Help Menu and search for multicam. It’s the same as the hard copy manuals.

Grass Valley does have an event number limit. For the life of me, after over six years, I can’t remember what it is. I wouldn’t be surprised if CMX does, too.
Which format are you using?
Try breaking it in half, or better yet, in thirds, and see if that works. You should be able to keep timecode intact by not ripple deleting.

Never mind..you already answered that. If your target is the web, and there will be no editing, H.264 is fine.
It’s not an editable codec, though, so if you’re going to bring it into FCP to edit, then DV/DVCPro is probably good enough, unless you want to consider working in uncompressed.

Actually, it really depends on what you’re going to be using it for. I spit out DV/DVCPro because I guessed you were going to be editing it in FCP, and since you had FCP 3, I guessed you’d be working at DV compression.

It all hinges on his laptop. If it can’t handle the sustained throughput of HD, then there’s nothing that will really help.
What resolutions do these HD projectors have as options? There are seemingly eleventy-billion of them.
The specific HD resolutions of the projectors and the specs of his laptop are what we’d need to know in order to tell you if it even has a chance of working.

I’d try QuickTime first. If you have QT Pro, you probably can convert it to DV/DVCPro NTSC (or Pal) using the export function.

If you ever have to recapture again, you might find a tape or two that has timecode that restarts on the miniDV can royally mess you up. Going back to zero is a huge PITA.
Depending on how you Capture Now, you could also get faux timecode if you have it accidentally set to capture across timecode breaks. At the break, it starts faking timecode. Everything after the break can be off.
But, I suppose you have to weigh these “might happens” against the headaches of doing it the other way and decide which is the lesser PITA to you!

Unless you both have access to uber-fast upload available to you via a T3 line or something, you might find uploading 30 GB will take so long you could snail mail it faster.
Sure, it can be done, but I’d test it first. Make sure you’re prepared for how long it’ll take.

Have you ever had to recapture from your Captured Now media, ben? In my experience, that’s where most of the nasty issues rear their ugly heads. If you’ve been fortunate to not have had to recapture, then I can see where you might not see as many problems.
