I second the emotion.
I bought my first copy of FCP (2.0) sealed and unregistered off of eBay back in 2000 or so because I was just starting out with my new business and cash was tight. It took forever for it to arrive (okay, really, a week…but i SEEMED like forever…)
I installed it on my BLue & white G3, and life was gooooood!!
Upgrades in hardware and software came along, and it was a really good way to get my foot in the FCP door.
As long as it’s a legal copy and a reputable seller, there’s no legal issue for you. Like Michael says, beware the Academic version. You can’t upgrade those….

Oh, I didn’t move the LT files ‘cos I was happy with the 39 gigs. I also figured I’d more likely have use for the LT files on my laptop. I don’t honestly see myself doing much Motion, SoundTrack Pro or DVDSP work on my laptop. I just want to be able to connect to that FW drive when I need to if I ever move a project from my G5 tower to my laptop to take to a client office or whatever. Then I’d likely wnat to have access to all the resources of each app.
I’d guess there’s a similar function in LT, though. With some of the apps you do have to keep all the template & specialized media together. From what I figured out trying to move these files is that some apps can only look at one place for the media at a time, unlike STP.

Yep. I moved all mine from my laptop to an external bus powered FW drive and it works fabulously. After I moved all the Apple Loops, DVDSP and Motion Templates, I gained over 25 gigs of space back on my laptop. Went from a bloated 65+ GB to a svelte 39.
There is an Setup button in STP in the Search tab in the lower left hand quadrant. Click on that, click the “+” button, and navigate to your external drive. Select the new location & hit the Index Now button. It will index the files on that drive and they theoretically should be available to you. I’ve not tried it with multiple indexed locations, however, so I don’t know how they integrate.

Ohhh, that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms.
The only way I know of to really do that is to set in and out points around the segment you want and export it out not recompressed as a separate movie file.
Then you open that up in AE and work away.

Firewire can be solid for some…but it’s not consistently solid for all, and therefore, Apple doesn’t recommend the use of firewire drives for media.
And neither do many of the folks here. Some do, many don’t. Some say they’ve been using FW drives for years and have never has a problem. Some can’t get sustained throughput and drop frames incessantly and the only solution is to get the media off the FW drive.
Brands also have fans and naysayers. If you’re interested, do a search of LaCie here and see what the general consensus is. Also try ProMax. Then there are the ones who recommend you buy bare drives from a place like zipzoomfly.com and an enclosure from a place like wiebetech.com and and build your own.

Scotty, no offense, but that’s a screaming deal for the ENTIRE FCP Studio. You get Motion, SoundTrack Pro, LiveType, Cinema Tools, Compressor, and and and andandadnadn….
If you had bought them all individually, it would have cost much much much more.
Granted, one can no longer buy them individually…but that’s a different thread.
I know it feels steep, but it really a big bargain & gets you current on software. Now’s the best time to upgrade.

Check out pages 273-275 in the on-board manual. Help>Final Cut Pro Manual if you’re using FCP5.
If using another version, search for “DV start/stop” (no quotes) and you should get to the right page.
The short version is you can select all the markers in the long capture and go to Modify>Make Subclip.
I highly suggest you read that section of the manual, however. This is prone to user errors that can bite you in the tushie.
