avi files import into fcp or even (gasp) imovie

I’d try QuickTime first. If you have QT Pro, you probably can convert it to DV/DVCPro NTSC (or Pal) using the export function.

What are your thoughts on Compression type: H.264? is it best to use DV/DVPro for export?

Actually, it really depends on what you’re going to be using it for. I spit out DV/DVCPro because I guessed you were going to be editing it in FCP, and since you had FCP 3, I guessed you’d be working at DV compression.

Never mind..you already answered that. If your target is the web, and there will be no editing, H.264 is fine.

It’s not an editable codec, though, so if you’re going to bring it into FCP to edit, then DV/DVCPro is probably good enough, unless you want to consider working in uncompressed.

AVI is a wrapper. I recently recieved an AVI which contained a DV file from a Pinnacle edit system. I had no problem importing and using in FCP5. Didn’t need to do anything.

Understand that AVI is a wrapper and contain any number of codecs (as MOV can).

What’s IN the AVI?

Open in Quicktime and do Window/Show Movie Info.

Well at this point there is no access to fcp so i will be using imovie. it is an online submission for Siggraph in MA. They are extracting media from the dvd with Cinematize and then preparing it for me. So we just need a high res mov, .avi, .qt or
.mpeg format only. 200MB total size or less for the submission. I’m having him create a QT in imovie ! with H264 compression, at best 720 X 480 and to **deselect the prepare for internet streaming**so I can bring it into imovie and create a title card. I will also be creating a simple DVD from this extraction, so the best quality he can get me, the better. what is the best export compression first for him to get me the media, and then second, for me to export for this online submission? hope this is clear and thanks for your help.
