I can’t vouch for the Express 34 version of Seritek’s card, but I have been using Firmtek’s hot-swappable RAID system in my G5 for the last couple of years. With a two-drive RAID and several other striped pairs of drives available, I have more than 3 TB of storage. Hadn’t had any problems yet.
The drives get swapped perhaps once or twice every few days, depending on what projects I’m working on (each client gets their own RAID drives). So it’s not like the drives get swapped a lot. But they’ll insert and lock w/o a problem.
I read a review of one hot-swappable system which noted you had to be careful about inserting the drive into the housing; that it was possible to mis-align the pins in the backplane. I’ve never had that issue with the Firmtek system. The alignment is perfect every single time.

Another way: Get rid of the media you accidently mis-captured from your Capture folder. Make sure your capture settings are properly set. Select the clips you want to replace, hit Apple-C, and check “off” the box that says “use Logged Clip Settings” in the Batch Capture dialog box.

That’s interesting. It was mentioned in one of the sessions at NAB that one way to deal with critical color is to use a CRT for accurate color, and have a really good LCD to check for details.

There’s a full explanation in the help file of Adobe AE. Type in “field seperate footage” in the “search for” field and it’ll find the page with the info.

Something to consider when it comes to tape decks. I’m in the process of evaluating the upgrade to HD and looked at the cost of tape vs the cost of hard drives and quickly discovered that, per minute, DVCPro HD tape costs as much as SATA hard drives.
However, with DVCPro HD tapes, you still need to spend in excess of $25,000. And you don’t get the speed of retrieval as you would with hard drives.
There are hot-swap SATA systems out there worth looking at, and they don’t have to be horrendously expensive to work well. I’m currently using a system from Firmtek.
A question for me to ponder down the line is: how to deliver a show once it’s gone through post production? Tape? Hard drive? Blu-Ray (data, not DVD-compressed).
Walter… how are you planning to deliver Good Eats? Great work done on that show, by the way!

We recently shot some material in New Zealand, which also has 50 Hz lighting.
It was OK with tungsten/halogen light sources. But fluorescents were a serious problem.
I didn’t experiment with shutter speeds so can’t vouch for their effectiveness. But if your camera has a clear scan mode I know that will work… come to think of it, it’s the same as adjusting the shutter speed to match, so any multiple of 50 (1/100th) should work. The only drawback is that you’d lose almost a stop of brightness.

I’ve had AE for quite some time but have only used it for basic work. Partly because I hadn’t had the time to sit down and get to fully understand the tools. Now I’m looking at doing more sophisticated jobs and need to know a whole lot more.
For someone like me, tutorials like this get a lot more across than a textbook with a few pictures.

BTW, “loop through” can go through either BNC connector. It’ll just pass right through the deck. Some monitors feature this as well. Very handy when you want to pass the signal through a display or waveform/vectorscope.

Here’s my setup:
The Decklink is connected to the UVW-1800 via component. However the Y-out from the Decklink is sent to the “Ref Video” of the UVW-1800. That is “looped through” the deck (the two BNC connectors are adjacent to each other at the back of the deck) and fed back into the UVW-1800 via the Y-in of the deck via a short BNC patch cable. This provides the blackburst reference needed to ensure a stable image. An external blackburst generator is not needed.
I take the Y/C out and feed that to an external broadcast monitor via a Magni MM400 waveform monitor/vectorscope to check the signal and do color corrections.
The Blackmagic Decklink setup preferences are set up as follows:
Output: SDI & Analog Y, B-Y, R-Y.
Input: Y, B-Y, R-Y Video & Analog.
Soutput: HD to SD Letterbox 16:9
Output: On Analog Out
NTSC setup: 7.5 IRE (thanks to Graeme Natress to setting me straight on this!)
Video Desktop: Enabled After Resstart
Video Output Behavior: Single Field Out when Paused is not checked on.FCP’s Audio/Video settings are set up like this:
Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz (this can be changed as needed).
Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz (this needs to match the sequence preset).
Device Control Preset: Sony UVW-1800
Video Playback: Blackmagic NTSC – 8 bit (720×486)
Audio Playback: Decklink AudioGo to the View dropdown menu — External video — All frames.
