MacBook Pro HD monitoring
I would like to get a 17″ MacBook Pro for FCP to use with my HVX200. How can I check color accuracy?
Do I need to get an HD monitor and attach it to my HVX200 through firewire? Will there be audio sync issues.
Or will the MacBook display work?
Planning to output to DVDs, web sites, and potentially a rented 1200A DVCPROHD deck. -

You can monitor thru the camera and connect the camera to a component monitor (like we did at NAB). It would be best to get a production monitor for this…and even an SD monitor like the Sony PVM-14L5 with 800 scanlines has component ins and looks VERY good. AJA had one sitting on top of the Sony $35,000 HD CRT monitor, and I have to tell you, the image looked EXACTLY the same.

That’s interesting. It was mentioned in one of the sessions at NAB that one way to deal with critical color is to use a CRT for accurate color, and have a really good LCD to check for details.

Does the Sony PVM-14L5 accept the HD analog component coming off the HVX200, or SDI analog

I believe it does take HD Analogue into it’s SDI Analoge inputs and works. But for HD SDI, you need the optional HD SDI card. Yes, there is an HD SDI card for this…like they were planning for it to be used this way.

The analog on the 14L5/1 is in fact HD and SD. The monitor auto-senses the signal that is being fed to it and switches automatically. This monitor will do 720p/60, 1080i60 and 1080psf24 (by doubling the frames to 48i) and SD in PAL or NTSC. It’s truly multiformat. There’s no need for the overpriced HD-SDI in. If you can, try and find a 20L5/1, but it will be hard. I know there are 14L5/1 monitors still floating around. These monitors are discontinued, so once they are sold out, that’s it. Why did Sony discontinue these great monitors? We’ll never know.
