    Thanks Sascha,

Well it does look a bit milky, so that’s a good sign. And yes it is between 100 and 700… again good sign.

This does raise a question I have had though. I think I am correct when I say that 100% white on the IRE scale is 700.

But the waveform monitor on Resolve goes up to 1023. I can raise the gain on the image all the way up to 1023 without the image losing detail or “overexposing”… this confuses me a bit. It seems to me if I go over 700 I should be whiting out. (The image does not look nice over 700 though – it has a “too contrasty” look to it)

Or is happening because I am using LOG and just don’t understand how to color correct in the LOG world yet? 🙂

    Christoper,

I had been wondering if my Quadro was being used by Resolve. Under “About DaVinci Resolve” is says:

    Version 8.0 1 GPU

Does that mean it is using the Quadro?

If there was only 1 graphics card in my computer (say just the GT 120) would it say 0 GPU?

Jan, I’m only a small step ahead of you here. I just put a Quatro 4000 in my Mac to set up Resolve.

A few things that might help:

    – Blackmagic has a configuration guide on their website separate from the regular manual. It’s very useful.

    – The 1 slot is on the bottom and the 4 is the one on the top.

    – I “downgraded” my GUI card from a Radeon 4870 to a GT 120 because the 4870 used 2 of the power connectors leaving none for the Quatro 4000. The GT is also like the Quatro using only 1 slot width. This gives you 1 more opening for the HDMI in/out connectors for the Decklink. Eventually I will replace the GT 120 with another Quatro. The GT 120 is under $150.

    – If your monitor does not have HDMI or SDI you may need a Blackmagic HDLink Pro as an SDI to Display Port adapter for your monitor. They are about $500 dollars and there does not seem to be any other option – if there is another option someone please let me know as I have not bought the HDLink yet 🙂

I’d like to know this too.

From Alexis Hurkman’s Color Correction Handbook:

2.5 This is the gamma for both SD and HD video displays as defined by the Rec. 709 standard. 2.5 is the gamma standard you should adhere to when you select a display for color correction work.

2.2 This is the default gamma setting used by all versions of Windows and Mac OS X starting with version 10.6 “Snow Leopard” and above

    Thanks Kevin for the answers.

It was between the Dream Color and the NEC back when I was shopping around. I ended up with the NEC because it was half the price, but in hindsight I wish I had gone with the Dreamcolor.

I finally got the settings right and can see a picture on the TV! So I can now at least start to learn the software.

The next step is to buy an HDLink (the displayport version) when I want to hook up to me NEC.

    So much to learn……

At the moment I’m simply trying to get a picture with the HDMI input on my TV (I have a color correct monitor but need an HDLink I’m think).

I figure I should be able to set up everything with the HDMI TV – not color correct of course – just see everything working.

I have a NEC PA241w. It has DVI or Display Port (not mini) as the main inputs. It is a color correct monitor capable of 10 bit – it’s considered a “pro” monitor, but I’m not sure why it’s lacking in SDI or HDMI.

By the way – what is the cheapest Color Reference monitor with SDI inputs?

This whole concept of using the Capture card to connect to my monitor is new to me.

I still can’t get a picture on my monitor using any software – although Video Camera > Decklink SDI> Media Express> Decklink HDMI > TV HDMI works fine.

    1) Should it be able to see my monitor as a display in my Mac Pro settings?

    2) If not how will I be able to calibrate my monitor now?

July 17, 2011 at 2:16 am in reply to: Installing Resolve 8 over 7

I just tried it. Same message. “unable to locate the following external devices”

I think Resolve 8 must be and update to 7. So 7 must be installed first.

Each time I install 7 or 8 there is a firmware update too, which I think has messed something up.

I updated to Resolve 8 and now I can’t connect to the Decklink at all when I start up FCP7…. hmmmm….

But when you said it must say “DECKLINK” in the name I’m assuming you meant “Blackmagic”?

Or maybe that is my problem?

    Thanks Kevin,

That clears things up a lot for me. So I need 3 monitors (including the grading display).

I discovered I need a new monitor anyway since Resolve wont work on my 1680×1050.
