You’re post is missing an important aspect of the science, or black art, of video playback, i.e. you don’t seem to be giving the throughput of your hard drive subsystem enough credit for its contribution to realtime performance. In fact, you haven’t even mentioned anything about your media storage, without that info it’s tough for us to know why you’re not getting the performance you’re expecting. So spill, give us some info on your media storage. Not a single spinning disk I hope?

Apple strikes again just in time for NAB. This is gonna present a MAJOR issue for all Abobe users on the Windows platform, and will pose issues for many Avid users too. It’s not insurmountable, but extremely inconvenient and potentially costly in terms of added time and hardware required to create deliverables for many editors.

It was updated in January, but no more from now on, thus it will be vulnerable in the future, as will QT 10. Since we, video editors, are really the only people using QT 7, little of what you may read addresses that version.g

QT 7 will not be getting any more updates, thus it will be vulnerable to new viral threats moving forward. So, it is probably not prudent to advise Windows users to proceed with it as if they will be protected.

Your problem is NOT hardware related, it’s an ongoing issue with the optimization, or lack there of, of the XAVCi codec in Premiere. That issue has been a known issue for a long time – I personally discussed it with Al Moody of the Adobe development team many months ago, because I tested the codec thoroughly and found that only one stream icould be played back without dropping frames, even on an 8-drive RAID generating 1100MB/sec.
The codec was supposed to have been better optimized in the latest versions of CC, but from what my clients tell me that just ain’t so.
So, don’t spend a lot of time fussing with your hardware, cuz if it can’t run on a big beefy RAID with good hardware, you’ll never get five streams to playback on a single SSD drive.
You’ll need to transcode to a hi-performance codec such as ProRes HQ until Adobe fixes their handling of the codec… That’s your only solution at this time.

“This has indeed been the biggest issue for Avid through the years. However, it’s also why Avid still exists, and why it’s not going away any time soon.
Innovation by Avid’s development teams is typically rejected by longterm users, while it’s expected and embraced everywhere else. It’s pretty tough to grow a new audience when you’ve got little new to show.

Have you installed the latest Nvidia and Cuda drivers? Without knowing all the gory details it’s hard to say anything definitively about your workstation, and even worse, it would easy to guide you astray.
Are you using the Nvidia and Cuda apps inside Apple System Preferences to update your drivers? (Not set to auto, but manually). If not, you probably should be.
Before making any changes be sure to clone your boot drive just in case.
