So I heard about Apple not committing to updating QT security settings for Windows. It’s just a matter of time before the IT police at my company uninstalls it without letting me know first. What are the ramifications of Premiere Pro’s editing workflow without QuickTime?

You won’t be able to work with any Quicktime format. ProRes QT, that many a camera or external recorder produce…you won’t be able to import nor even view those files. You’ll need to convert to another format with a computer that has Quicktime on it.

If you can get a hold of QT 7…use that. It’s updated. It’s just QTX they are talking about.

Also you won’t be able to export to any QT format…even DNxHD.

    Shane,

QT 7 will not be getting any more updates, thus it will be vulnerable to new viral threats moving forward. So, it is probably not prudent to advise Windows users to proceed with it as if they will be protected.

I didn’t think that the issues were with QT7…I thought that all vulnerabilities were with QT10.

That was last updated Jan 7… https://support.apple.com/kb/DL837?locale=en_US

It was updated in January, but no more from now on, thus it will be vulnerable in the future, as will QT 10. Since we, video editors, are really the only people using QT 7, little of what you may read addresses that version.g

Adobe has a blog post up about this. You can actually use some QuickTime features in Premiere/Win without having QuickTime installed, something Adobe has been working on for years and adding more support where possible over several versions.

Apple strikes again just in time for NAB. This is gonna present a MAJOR issue for all Abobe users on the Windows platform, and will pose issues for many Avid users too. It’s not insurmountable, but extremely inconvenient and potentially costly in terms of added time and hardware required to create deliverables for many editors.

Actually this is no more or less a problem than it has always been. Apple deprecated QT a few years ago. So no more updates, which would include security issues.

This affects QT kit, so it doesn’t matter if you mean QT7 or QT10. Those are just player apps, although they are associated with 32-bit versus 64-bit components. Both Avid and Adobe are working on what they have to do to replace the core components they need in order to function. For example, you get media wrapped as .mov, what do they need. It’s not just ProRes. A lot of graphics folks still deliver elements with Animation codec. It also affects anything that’s H.264 whether wrapped as .mov or .mp4.

But stop and think for a moment. The original notice came from the Dept of Homeland Security. And who is having issues with Apple these days????? Just sayin’… 🙂

    I posted something on this:

    https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/rip-quicktime-pat-horridge?trk=prof-post

Basically it looks like folk are:

    Uninstalling QT.
Re-associating all QT files with another player (like VLC)
    Disabling QT browser plugins
Re-installing QT but only the core component. Not the player or the optional components.
    Block QT in your firewall.

That allows some QT functionality but reduces the risks.

This may be a good reason to invest in a MacBook Pro to sit next to my PC..
