If you decide to switch to FCPX don’t think you’ll “sail through the learning curve.” If you want to get up to speed fast, Premiere and Resolve are the NLEs you should consider.

You’re thinking is “bassackwards.” You asked about cropping to accomplish your goal, but you should be thinking scaling the frame down to the appropriate size, then repositioning as the other poster mentioned.

Without any information about your drive(s) on which your media is stored and played back no one can possibly know how to answer your question. Your issue might be the subtitling software, but it could also easily be that your media drive(s) don’t have the sustained throughput necessary for seamless playback.
***You can never provide too much info about your hardware when asking technical questions here.

You simply must have between 10 and 20% free space on ALL hard drives. NLEs write temporary files during encodes, and will write those to any drive where space exists prior to creating the finished file. It certainly sounds as if you’re cutting hard drive space way too close to the upper limits, thus causing the issues you’re experiencing.

Okay, we get that you’ve been very good at trying all the right things in an attempt to fix all of the “secondary” things that might be causing the issues you’ve outlined, but what I haven’t seen from you is any discussion about the OS. How did you get Yosemite on that machine? Did you update over the top of another version? Or, have you installed the Yosemite from the ground up?

Both Windows and Mac versions of Resolve are limited to two GPUs… If you want to use more GPUs you’ll have to switch to the Linux version of Resolve. At least that used to be the case…

Create a master project with your bin structure and save it as Master Project. Later, when starting a new project, open Master Project and do a Save As retitling it as whatever you’d like.
