Jog controls are J-(left)K-(pause) L-(right)… Then there’s always help and the manual for the other zillion keyboard navigation commands.

Sure it is. If you want to edit native HDV just choose easy setup HDV 1080i50 (I’m assuming you’re PAL cuz you’re from Bristol, UK).

    Shane,

Way expensive — their SATA PCI card seems way overpriced. G-Tech gives the card and a double 7-foot cable with each of their G-SATA drives. I’d check them out if I were Ernie.

    Lori,

There is only one way to charge for something that is open-ended or infinitely variable, and that is to charge by some unit that is finite and calculable — i.e. units of time, such as: by the hour, the day, or the week. When you buy eggs at the grocery you pay by the dozen. When you buy gas, its by the gallon. Like the grocer or gas station operator, you also need to charge a specific amount for a specific unit. In your case, its for your creative/technical time and abilities.

And, you should make it very easliy calculable — meaning, don’t get fancy and start breaking it all down into machine time vs. your time, vs. writing, vs. online, vs. graphics etc. For example, I have only two types of billing time, 1) consulting time, and then 2) all the rest.

    Hope this helps…

Thanks for the reply Luke. I guess someone gave me the wrong information when they said you guys had an upgrade path. I just bought my Extreme card less than two-weeks ago and I really like it a lot, however I probably should bought the HD card. I guess I’ll just suffer for a while longer in SD land.

    All the best,

SATA is faster. G-Tech G-SATA 320gb drive with SATA card and and cable can be had for under $400.

    Samuel,

Yikes, I’m very good at EDL cleaning and such stuff normally, but an HDV EDL sounds awfully scary to me, since it refers to video information (not actual frames) coming from a long GOP MPEG2 source. The fact that you’re headed to a color grading facility and also going to to make an IP, neither cheap propositions, scares me further. I hesitate to offer advice to you on this job as you are breaking new ground in many ways…

If you care to send me the file for examination I’ll be happy to take a peek and see if I spot any of the extraneous header info I ealier referred to.

Try opening in a text editor. Make sure all columns line up properly, and and take out any non-essential header information. This works on many other NLEs, it might work on FCP too.
