Call Maxtor and ask them if the new drives might need a firmware upgrade. While I myself am a Maxtor user and fan, others have reported compatility issues with various SATA controller cards.

Two things to think about…

1. HDV is not like the other tape formats you’re used to, in that it does not have individual video frames, each with its own timecode stamp. Instead, HDV uses the stored data of approximately 15-frames, that is stored as a data chunk, and from that digital information, frames must be decoded, virtually on the fly.

2. Because of the calculations that are necessary each time the camera starts and stops, Apple was forced to create new clips at every code break in the first go around of FCP. So, getting the camera up to speed and having a few seconds of role-in time is critical. Supposedly, Apple has either done something about this already, or will be doing somthing soon.

I use the Bella Pro keyboard with a jog shuttle knob that does that trick very elegantly. Not cheap ($144 at MacMall), but it does lots of neat things…

I posted a similar message on the Final Cut Forum that had to do a one frame issue when dealing with imported, not captured, audio and video files. In my case, I imported a seperate audio and video files that were known to be precisely the same length, to the frame. However, when brought to the FCP timeline, audio was one frame longer than video. So, I think FCP may have an issue. On the otherhand, I have an Extreme card myself, and I use the BM codecs for most things, so its possible that even in this case the setup for the sequence might have been affected in some way by the BM software.

Checkout the Blackmagic cards from Decklink. A whole lot better idea and not a whole lot of money. There is a whole Cow forum devoted to Blackmagic, and the users or manufacture’s reps there will gladly point you in the right direction.
