Posted by Ernie Santella on August 9, 2005 at 3:47 am

Just moved over to FCP5 from Media 100 (I know, what took so long)
I’ve read that SATA drives are the fastest. What do you guys recommend in the 300-500gig range? (Brand/store etc)

And what about the SATA/PCI card? I see many drives come with the card included? What type of card do I need for my G5/1.8?

    Thanks in advance.

The HD for Indies guy recommends the FirmTek stuff.

    Here is his review:

And here is the Firmtek link:

    Shane,

Way expensive — their SATA PCI card seems way overpriced. G-Tech gives the card and a double 7-foot cable with each of their G-SATA drives. I’d check them out if I were Ernie.

Hmmm…that didn’t seem all that expensive to me. And if they are reliable, and come highly recommended by someone in the video business who tested them, then I’d consider them.

As my Mama aways says: Cheap is as cheap does.

    Dang it…why can’t I edit my post?!

Didn’t read well enough. G-Tech is a GOOD company. They produce the G-Raid which is an EXCELLENT drive…so they know there stuff.

Look at them. Pardon my previous post.

I use a Firmtek SATA system and it’s been working out nicley.

A good deal is the hot-swap system. If you need more capacity, just get the bare drives, fit them with the Firmtek drive tray ($20 per drive) and you’re all set. Swapping out drive pairs is a simple process, too.

What physical drives should I get? That article listed the Maxtor Maxline III, the Maxtor DiamondMax 10, and the Hitachi 7K250 and 7K400 drives.

You guys use any of the above drives?

Check out Mac Gurus – https://www.macgurus.com/productpages/sata/satakits.php and do a search in this forum for SATA for lots of info – Good luck!

After reading the Macguru’s article about the Maxtor drives having incompatiblity issues, I decided to go with Hitachi drives and the Firmtek card/bays. Thanks for all your help!
