You probably accidently hit the button that toggles “wireframe” on. Make sure this is not on and you shoyld be good to go.

Sounds like a broken card or cable. Unless the BM guys can give you a way to ID the offending component, I’d consider asking for replacements of both.

I have the same setup, except I’m using a UVW-1800 with Extreme, and all works perfectly. Are you trying to control the deck using the RS-422 cable connected to the Extreme card? If so, that is the proper way to do it… You might want to check your settings on the deck and possibly set them back to default factory settings.

Either D5 (Panasonic) or HDCAM (Sony). These are the major competing flavors of true high definition. Where are you located? If you’re in a big city you should be able to find a facility that can output for you from your finished project off a hard drive.

You’ll be much better off with SATA drives. They are much faster and more reliable than Firewire. There is a reason all computer manufacturers, including Apple, build their boxes around SATA drives.

Its not a good idea to master back to HDV. Last week at the LAFCPUG meeting this was mentioned as being frought with problems, specifically with video levels, just as you’ve experienced. I realize this is not exactly what an owner of a new SONY M10 deck wants to hear, but a least it will keep you from struggling with something that won’t ultimately do the job for you.
Apparently the ticket is either to rent an HDCAM deck for mastering, or find a facility that will do it for you from your finished show off a portable hard drive.

I know you can edit one layer of 8-bit uncompressed off a single SATA drive, however, I’m not sure about additional layers.

I read an article just a few days ago that spelled out the mjaor differences, and that was the most glaring one they mentioned. Its very possible that the guy who wrote the article got that wrong. I’d imagine that would be a deal breaker for many people.

You haven’t mentioned what device you’re using to playback the “HDV” tapes that you wish to capture, and you can’t just playback HDV from a standard DV deck. Without that information your question cannot be answered.
HDV cameras and decks have the capability to output SD video from an HDV source, but its not as simple as plugging in the firewire cable and capturing. You have to setup the camera or deck properly, and the setup is slightly different for each model. For example, camera just outputs the center of the 16×9 frame, while another lets you select your frame.
