    hi all

i’m not very well versed in the cards’ use in video applications (we actually use our decklink xt cards as video playback devices for nuendo 3) but i have a couple of questions.

    1. if a project has been shot hd dv can i capture it as dv using the xt card? and if so presumably i’d have to go in component analogue?

    2. if i just use dv rather than hd dv and want to avoid having to render any video for playback preumably i have to capture using the decklink card? (as opposed to someone giving me a dv file – which always seems to require a render).

    many thanks.

    Max,

You haven’t mentioned what device you’re using to playback the “HDV” tapes that you wish to capture, and you can’t just playback HDV from a standard DV deck. Without that information your question cannot be answered.

HDV cameras and decks have the capability to output SD video from an HDV source, but its not as simple as plugging in the firewire cable and capturing. You have to setup the camera or deck properly, and the setup is slightly different for each model. For example, camera just outputs the center of the 16×9 frame, while another lets you select your frame.
