HD Storage Speed
Posted by Richard Martz on October 7, 2005 at 6:36 pmI’m about to purchase some more storage and wondered what kinds of sustained i/o spped I’m going to need for doing HD shot on a Varicam? I know those cameras shoot 720P natively. Ideas anyone?

October 7, 2005 at 7:23 pmwell, if you load them native as DVCPRO-HD it’ll work off of any 7200 rpm firewire 400. I’d suggest a striped FW800 for multiple streams and extra overhead (Like a G-RAID)

October 7, 2005 at 9:52 pmI’ll second what Charlie says…but I’d consider firewire 800 drives the minimum for this. And yes, G-Raids are GREAT for this type of footage.

You’ll be much better off with SATA drives. They are much faster and more reliable than Firewire. There is a reason all computer manufacturers, including Apple, build their boxes around SATA drives.

October 8, 2005 at 5:21 pmFor DVCPro HD codec, you’re fine with FW 800 units like the LaCie’s and G-RAID’s. They will capture and edit just fine.
For more speed and 720p uncompressed, Fibre Channel is the real way to go. They’re more expensive but much more stable at this time than the current SATA RAID’s out there. I run the Medea FCR2X and would recommend it to anyone looking for the maximum speed and stability.
