You kind of cover a load of bases in your post, but I’ll hit the most important points that pertain to FCP.
You don’t have to have “the latest” versions of FCP and QT, but you do need FCP 5 and a recent version of Quicktime to edit HDV natively in FCP. And, the so-called native files that FCP creates are not exchangable with apps on a PC.
Not sure about you point regarding the 2gb file limit in Windows, which is no longer the case for the most part under Windows XP, but this has little to do with exchanging native HDV files between platforms.
And, the GOP structure is determined by the camera when HDV is recorded to tape, so true, it would be the same in all apps, but that is also not terribly germaine to the issue of exchanging files between platforms as it is not the issue that prevents FCP HDV files from playing on PCs.

How many hours of video do you expect, and how long will your finished project be? These are the biggest determinants in defining an HDV workflow.

If you upgraded to Quicktime 7.0.4 when it was first released this could easily be causing your problem. It did create this problem for me. If so, check the Apple site for the cure, which is a rollback to QT 7.0.1 and then an install of 7.0.3

Yes, you should be able to capture (at least) four channels of audio. I’ll get back you later today after I have a look at the settings on my system.
As for upgrading to Tiger, consider a complete reinstallation on a new drive, and keep your present system drive as a backup until you are absolutely certain that everything is working well. Its a very simple way to upgrade without any pressure or concern about losing anything.

1. To capture four channels of audio simultanously you would have to capture via SDI. Are you? There are only two analog audio inputs.
2. Problems with Tiger??? What exactly would those be?

Check out the conversion Widget from http://www.digitalheaven.com. It might help you unless you’re exporting MPEGs, that’s a horse of another color.

Well Karl, my “unfounded assumptions” are founded upon what you wrote originally. So, excuse me if I have somehow misconstrued your statement, “I’m converting Tivo-recorded DVD’s for editing for my personal reference library.”

I’m suggesting that you play out of your Tivi into a standalone DVD recorder, thereby relieving yourself of the chores of encoding and re-encoding, etc. It sounds like the stuff you’re doing is for home viewing, so its hard to understand why you would want to take so many steps in the process. With a DVD recorder you could simply pause your show on Tivo at the very beginning, hit record on the DVD recorder, and the hit play on the Tivo. This way you end up with a very high quality DVD in real time with very little work and no encoding time or issues.
