No one hates you, and I hope you’re not scarred for life by anything I said. Just understand that there are many professionals on this forum struggling to make a living in this most difficult business, and it can be a bit irritating when “mole hills” are made into mountains. Just lay off the caps and the multitudinous question marks and I think all will be forgiven.

Its about 50/50 for me. It seems to get stuck at times and it can be really annoying when it does it over and over again. And clients love it…

This is like saying you’re packing up your car for a trip based upon one thing and one thing only, how much you can fit in your trunk. Exactly why are you so concerned with trying to pack your media onto a disc into the tightest possible space? I can’t remember exactly what the so called sweet spot is for a disc going to the replicators, but I can tell you that there is a very fair amount of latitude, and it is not the most important factor to consider by a long shot. If you simply lower your bitrate by 5% and the quality is acceptable, you’re good to go. I am fairly certain you would be hard pressed to notice a qualitative difference in your video quality with just a 5% drop in bitrate.

Since you began asking questions about this project I’ve been wondering why it is that you are pressing the limits of the envelope? Have you evaluated the project at a slightly lower bitrate that comfortably fits on a single DVD-5???

The only way to assure 100% compatibility is to use DVD “replication,” i.e. stamping from a glass master, typically with a minimum order of 1000 units.
When “duplicating” or burning DVDs, there are going to be a certain number which will be incompatible with some set top DVD players. That is inevitable. Just a couple of years ago the industry average was 15% incompatibility, thankfully that number has gone down very substancially. Today, when using high quality media, the incompatibility issue has become virtually inconsequential. Maybe its 1 or 2% for most people.
If you do your homework, using DVD Studio Pro and standard DVD burners you can easily create, duplicate, and market DVDs that are very good quality, and without the fear that many of them will be returned due to incompatibility issues.

To the contrary, FCP is incredibly simple. Something is wrong with your hard disk subsystem. If you still have the media on your old hard drive I would go into disk utility and start over again. Erase each drive individualy and then restripe at raid-0, this time with no journaling. If that is a problem, then its possible that your Sonnet controller has issues with those Maxtor hard drives.

Are you capturing as 8 or 10 bit uncompressed? What type of drives are you using? How full are your drives?
