  • Dropped frames during capture?

Posted by David Olsen on February 3, 2006 at 11:31 pm

Hi! We’re in the process of capturing materials from a Digibeta deck into Final Cut Pro. We haven’t had any problem really until just recently — we’ve gotten some materials, that when we attempt to log and capture them, they come up as having “dropped frames during capture”.

Any advice as to what we can do in this situation?

Also, to elaborate, only certain segments come up with the problem. So for example, the Digibeta might have 4 episodes on it, but only the 3rd episode comes up with dropped frames.

Are you capturing as 8 or 10 bit uncompressed? What type of drives are you using? How full are your drives?

Dropped frames happen when your clip is too long and/or your drives are too slow.
Capturing “Episodes”? Sounds like you are trying to capture a very long clip.
To do this at 10 bit you need really fast drives. If you don’t have a RAID array, you probably won’t be able to do this.

Let us know what kind of gear ya got.

Thanks for the insight! I think it was the fact that the drive was nearly full. We capture in batches of 4-5 episodes (nearly the full drive), so I cleared the scratch drive and tried capturing just that one episode, and it worked out!

    Problem solved.
