Why not do a test? Try selecting muliple items when holding down the Shift, Control, and Command buttons, and see what the difference is.
Also, are you aware that you can open the keyboard command palate to see and/or change every keyboard command?

For the record, Bob and I give this type of advice here for free because we want nothing more than for everyone here on the Cow to become rich and successful. So, go for it… Don’t get bogged down with the hardware, spend your time perfecting your craft and just go tell tell great stories.

An 8-drive RAID is like a Ferrari engine for your edit station – that’s because every time you double the number of disks in Ali array you virtually double the throughput. And, it comes with RAID 5 or 6 protection. You still need to backup everything, so don’t forget a backup solution either to disk or to LTO tape.

No need to self-deprecate, story sense is far more important than hardware sense.
SAS is the fastest current connectivity for RAIDs, though thunderbolt-2 is virtually identical. And, there are SAS to Thunderbolt expansion chassis that make it possible to move the controller card and enclosure to a new Mac later.

No, not all new drives, but new enclosure and controller. And yes, the reason I’m steering you in that direction is because eSATA is old and limited technology that is just not a wise investment at this time.

I have no idea about that one. Sorry.
CalDigit makes a good eSATA card, and pretty sure they are sold in the UK. However, as I mentioned here weeks ago, I really think you need to go with SAS, not eSATA, for 4K work.

Go back to my original post… I mentioned LSI as the low cost alternative to ATTO and Areca. Of course, I have no idea if the brand is sold in the UK.

Before you do anything else you should purchase Disk Warrior and run it on your drive. It will be the best $99 you ever spent, and if the drive is corrupted and your issue is not a hardware failure DW will most likely repair it.

Your NAS storage is your most expensive storage, so you have as PO yourself if, just because you can, does it really make sense? Is using your NAS storage for non-media files an economical use of that expensive storage?
