Regarding the bins (Ive never learned how to respond to quotes is forums)
FCPX only allows for one group of media to be open at a time. I can separate shots and locations with keywords as I do, but I cannot leave them open for a visual reference and quick access as I’m trying to add clips to the timeline from multiple locations but at the same period of time. In PP, Avid or 7 for 3 cameras I have 3 bins open side to side (or stacked) and I go from one bin to the other adding clips down the line as an event unfolds in several different locations. In X I’m forced to close down all other visual references to access one. Its far more time consuming.
Regarding “extend edit”. No this is not possible in X or 7. Both force you to select an edit point move to a location and then “Shift X”. In Avid and PP, with one stroke, wherever your playhead is when I hit “N” the edit rolls to the playhead without any selection. I have “Y” mapped to roll left to the playhead. This makes it so easy to go through your rough cut and roll edits. Its a huge time killer in FCP and carpal tunnel inducer I might add.
Regarding Pancake editing. This is huge for both doc and event editing. Avid has source side sequence play, so it can do the same thing without having two open sequences. If you want to take a long sequence and cut it down to a shorter one using selects that you’ve marked up, FCP X forces you to jump all over the sequence in time. And thanks to ditching I/O for “ranges” you can’t even use your inpoint as a placeholder to quickly jump back to the place in time where you want to place that clip from further down in the sequence.
Thats the problem with the simplification of the UI. It merely made if far more restrictive so as to make it easier for amateur and/or non-power users. And these “feature sets” are not there if you dig deeper as other “believers” tend to often spout.

FLOATING BINS!
Seriously, I cut events with multiple cameras shooting multiple locations that have to be cut together. Its a pain not being able to line up bins next to each other. I should also say, that the match frame is problematic due to the nature of keywording since it opens up at event level which gives me no reference to the clips that were near it (which is often the purpose) and take way to much time to load. I’m not sure that this could ever be changed though.Extend edit (in Avid Parlance not FCP) or for PP users “trim to playhead”.
Laying down a rough cut is great in FCPX. I absolutely hate the second pass, especially trimming to music. It’s so effortless in PP and AvidAnd lastly multiple open projects so I can pancake edit.
Premiere Pro’s inability to mark on clips while playing is the only thing that keeps me from wanting to ditch X for event editing. I have a feeling FCPX will never add these features and PP will correct theirs. The day Adobe makes their markers and patching up to par with say Avid’s, FCPX will no longer be a “Faster” editor for events imo. Still pretty good for corporate product videos though.

Are you in the angle editor or the timeline? Make sure you’re actually in the project sequence and not the angle editor.

Hi Dennis,
There are a number of things. The patching and track selection should have a follow function. Way too much mousing, clicking and dragging has to happen. In FCP 7 for instance a right click would give you the option to pull the target to from A1 or A2. In Premiere you have to drag it. Check out how avid can easily select track targets by lassoing and option lassoing over them. Its extremely smooth.
Re: Markers
When I’m playing a sequence, I want to hit “M” (or whatever hotkey) and the track that is targeted should have a marker placed on the clip. This is HUGE for cutting down events into highlights. Currently Premiere forces me to stop click on the clip and add a marker. This slows down my work process so badly that Premiere is just unusable for the loss in time. There is no reason markers should default to sticking to the top. As soon and you make an edit that time in place is obsolete and the marker is of no use. I want to hit play and mark up selects on the timeline without the stopping.
Oh and a fade down command like Avid’s! That would be awesome! I have more but those are the biggies for me.

I was really hoping for improved track targeting, patching and marker function. Color following playhead is great. Its one thing I sorely missed from Avid.

April 6, 2015 at 5:54 pm in reply to: Premiere Pro: Offline/Online editing – multicam sequence – XDCAM HD – How to online?Transcode the the clips to a proxy format. Then right click your source clips in the bin. Make offline. Rightclick again and relink to the proxy clips. After the cut do the same exact process and relink back to the original clips. These changes will ripple through your Multiclip sequence.

February 23, 2015 at 4:10 pm in reply to: Whats the quickest way to fade down multiple audio tracks in a sequence? Thanks Dennis it seems like there’s no way to do this without a lot of clicks. Problem with adding the audio x fade is that I have to select each track separately and pull it to the left. I’ll have to look into the bus assignment and see how fast of an operation that is. That might be the ticket for me. Thanks for the reply.

The time savings in using Plural Eyes over FCPX syncing will pay for itself in under two weeks. I have to sync two hour timelines all the time. Not even worth trying in FCPX. I only use the NLE sync for sequences under a 10 minutes. If you have long takes, it may be ok. But stop/start run and gun over a long period of time….fuhghetaboutit.

I won’t repeat what has already been mentioned but these are important to me.
Superior Markers
Flexible relinking
Ability to save customized effects and use later
Flexible proxy and full res mixing on the timeline
Multi-timeline stacked editing
Superior color tools
FAR superior audio sweetening tools with send to audition
Better trim options. I’ve said it before but FCP’s extend edit really sucks compared to everything else.Of course there are things that are superior in FCPX but you already know the software and pricing so its not worth mentioning. I will say that tracks do suck in PP vs FCPX in a way that they don’t suck in say Avid, because the patching system isn’t that well thought out and is clunky like FCP 7 as is the multi-edit trim selection. But if you’re used to FCP 7 it won’t feel so bad.

Try the superimpose effect under the “blend” effects. You can use the curves in the CC mode to correct it. Then save the that combo of the two for later use. And drop it on your light leaks. Not the same as composite modes, but unfortunately that was lost with the dropping of Avid FX.
