You know I didn’t watch them there. I saw the links and perhaps assumed they were streaming from the site my apologies. The Lynda membership for $25 would be worth it to learn the software, however there is a man on the forums named douglas who did 100 tutorials! All pretty much beginner stuff, which covers just about everything. https://community.avid.com/forums/p/67003/375237.aspx These are def free, and should get you going. My most valuable resource thus far has been the Cohen book.

Took 2 ******* days to figure this out. Thanks to noone but myself. But in case anyone else ever has problems with this here’s the solution. In order to make the keyframes work, you must add the keyframes BEFORE changing the value. Much different than how it works in FC or AE, and makes no sense to me but there it is.

November 26, 2011 at 9:44 pm in reply to: Switched to AVID from FCP. And so should you!Hey Ed,
The realtime mixing and automatic pairing of stereo tracks in FCP are far superior to MC. The way you have to keep re-linking a pair of audio tracks in avid makes me want to shoot my computer screen. And the way key framing works in the timeline, I prefer in FCP. A small thing to give up for the awesomeness of media composer. And since FCPX has lost many of these functions anyway, its a moot point as FCP7 is at the end of its life. I’m thankful of the competition which forces Avid to keep up and compete.
Mike,
check out avidscreencast.com this dude has many great video tutorials that will really help you. He has a very annoying accent that you have to get past though.

Hey I wrote up a post about switching, on Thanksgiving. You should read it. I started out on FCP 5 and mastered it up to 7. Once you learn how to trim in Avid you will wonder how you ever went without it. I was one of very few who used to use dynamic trimming in fcp which is a royal pain in the arse. Also, once you learn how to patch on the keyboard, it is 10x faster than in FCP and I did everything from the keyboard in tcp.
As far as tutorials “Avid Agility” is a must read. As check out avidscreencast.com. This dude has some great tutorials as well, though his voice really grades on you. It only takes about 2-4 weeks to get going if you commit yourself to it and then you start to fly. Funny thing is only after about a month of using avid exclusively I had to cut a show on FCP and didn’t know what to do! Of course it all came back, but switching back and forth from these programs can be a real head trip.

I just wrote a similar write up of my switching experience. I cut a feature right away on mc 5 and had to go back to FC7 to cut a tv show. Boy was I missing the feature in Media Composer! I would suggest buying a copy of Steve Cohen’s “avid agility”. You will jump very far ahead in no time. Its a great read. I haven’t downloaded 6 yet, as I don’t feel like paying another $300 for the borisCC (really sucks). The nice thing is that 6 still works off the principles of 5, so I don’t feel it will be a big deal getting the hang when I do.
You’ll find in time that there’s pretty much a way to do everything you were doing in FC (though some habits you’ll find are slowing you down) and a ton more options you never had.

Actually what I have found is that you must start play on “cam 1” and it will consistently play all angles with the TL in sync. I’m not sure why this is, but it’s consistent.

September 21, 2010 at 5:23 am in reply to: transcoded 7d footage w/mpg streamclip but cant L+TThanks gentlemen. I was under the impression that the best way to to organize footage was to use the L&T first. Essentially, I thought that L&T could be used as a “logging” only device for organizational purposes when using tapeless format.
So if the media is already transcoded, I should be logging the footage in the browser then instead of L&T if I’m understanding properly.

September 21, 2010 at 2:43 am in reply to: transcoded 7d footage w/mpg streamclip but cant L+TWhen you say import, are you referring to the browser? I don’t understand what is the difference from one pro-res file to another? All other folders of files that I have imported into the l+T window were folders of pro-res .mov’s just as this one is. The only difference is they had not been altered in their original state. Shouldn’t all acceptable codecs work in the L-T window? These are pro-res files after all.
