I’m working on a short shot on 7D. The files were given to me on an external HD. After having no success using the Canon software, I used mpg streamclip and have been logging with great success. However, there was a folder of footage that was recovered after the director had lost the footage. The files in this folder do not have the same structure as the ones that came off the cards. They are in a folder labeled scan1/reconstructed files/movies/quicktime

They are all QT movies with a .mov, but are still h.264’s. Well they still seemed to transcode to QT LT with success but, the l+T function still tells me they are unrecognizable.

As I understood, the whole folder and directory setup should not be an issue after having already transcoded the footage to prores correct?

I’m not sure that they’ll be compatible with the log and transfer window. Try just transcoding them in Compressor, then simply import the resulting files.

When you say import, are you referring to the browser? I don’t understand what is the difference from one pro-res file to another? All other folders of files that I have imported into the l+T window were folders of pro-res .mov’s just as this one is. The only difference is they had not been altered in their original state. Shouldn’t all acceptable codecs work in the L-T window? These are pro-res files after all.

You seem to be confused as to whats happening here.

You do not ingest ProRes files with Log and Transfer.

The footage shot by the 7D is H264. When you use Log and Transfer, you are creating (transcoding) new ProRes copies of the original H264 footage and importing those copies into FCP (they appear in the Browser).

The files that you transcoded in MPEG Streamclip bypassed that process. You created new ProRes copies without using Log and Transfer. All that needs to be done is for you to drag them into the Browser with the remainder of your footage.

You can only use Log and Transfer if you retained the original file structure on the card. If you do not have that, MPEG Streamclip is a good workaround for getting the media transcoded.

Thanks gentlemen. I was under the impression that the best way to to organize footage was to use the L&T first. Essentially, I thought that L&T could be used as a “logging” only device for organizational purposes when using tapeless format.

So if the media is already transcoded, I should be logging the footage in the browser then instead of L&T if I’m understanding properly.

That’s right… just choose file/import/file (or folder) and import them directly to the Browser if they are already ProRes files.

In order to log and transfer footage from the canon camera, you need the full file structure which includes thm files in the dcim folder.
