I was watching a Michael Wohl presentation on FCP X from an Amerstam User group, and I noticed that a lot of cool features he was touting were things that have already existed in Avid and premiere.

FCP 7 was so far behind on things, and so many people were using it exclusively that they didn’t realize the world of features had advanced leaps and bounds. Most of the “FAST” comments are coming from “FCP7 to FCPX” users more so that MC and PP users from what I’ve read.

I’ve decided to take a little time and go through the tutorials to be familiar with the paradigm and maybe learn it over time, just in case, but MC is so deep, I like spending my time mastering it. Plus I’m in LA where I doubt anyone will touch fcpx for the next 5 years if ever (in broadcast that is).

I have a question on this topic. I was given an project with .MTS files which are AVCHD? I cannot link to ama volume or otherwise. I’m afraid it has to do with the camera person renaming the folders. I tried using FCP l&t to create quicktimes to bring into avid but neither FCP nor avid could read the files. Mpeg stream clip won’t read them either. Is there a driver to download for the specific cameras to work with these files via AMA?

I understand the concept. My question is after having stacked them in a particular order, how can they be reordered? That video link wouldn’t play unfortunately. In fcp/ae you simply drag one up or down. In AE they cannot be dragged in the effects editor. My guess is there’s some way to do it after having stepped in. I just haven’t figured it out yet.

I’m aware of those shortcuts but going to the bin or toggling through bins is what I’m trying to speed up. Also when I want to overlap audio for a X fade I like to put the incoming/outcoming on 1-2/3-4. Something I do often. So not being able to move audio or video tracks vertically from the keyboard is a real time waster for me.

Also in FCP I could lower the volume of a track by 1 or 3 db with a keystroke. Extremely helpful! Please tell me that exists. I’m currently looking for it in MC. Going to the mouse so often drives me nuts. Guess I just gotta be patient in mastering the speed. I didn’t get it in fcp overnight.

Thats a bummer. One thing I miss about FCP was the ability to learn all the hotkeys by searching through the command pallet, and the fact that every single move was programmable. Although programming with the shift mod key may be the only necessary one in Avid, I wish it would at least show the rest of them.

  • sorry brain fart apparently mods can delete this thread.

Ok, I figured as much but just wanted to make sure I wasn’t doing double work for nothing. Thanks for the info.

I didn’t synch the clips. They were already done in Final Cut when I was offered the job. My plan was to start over with Avid, but I thought if FC had a consolidate feature like avid does then it should create new quicktime clips out of those which have already been synced. Instead of leaving them as separate pointers. And maybe I could skip the synching step.

Does media manage copy the “pointing data” only or does/can it make new quicktime files of the synched clips
