  • Thanks Rob. I didn’t see anything about monitor calibration capabilities (using a computer monitor as opposed to a broadcast monitor) for color correction as the matrox has, which is my primary objective along with compatibility with Resolve.

Purchase the book “Avid Agility”. Between that and Lynda.com training, you’ll be set.

    Shane,

I see you mentioned capture cards. Is that the last missing link for you? Do you not consider a trackless environment a dead end?

You can drop the Avid FX transition on top of a transition on a single video track. Open fx editor and click launch interface and there is a library of presets you can use. After you’ve found or created one to your liking, drag the avid fx icon into a bin and give it a custom name, which you can use over and over again. There is a good tutorial here on creating transitions with Boris Red (Avid FX). Its not too difficult. Once you see what Avid FX has to offer, and get a little used to it, you’ll find that you have a lot more at your fingertips then you previously thought.

Thanks Peter. I do have boris transfer currently is why I asked. Does the AFF read from Avid Media file folder or are new files created during the transfer? I plan on purchasing the BCC8 upgrade soon as well for MC 6.

I don’t get why avid give you such a fuss. I started on Media 100 in the late 90’s (in school) then went to final cut 5-7 and then to Avid. The only thing I really miss in FC is the compositing within the NLE, which you can’t do in Avid and the automatic pairing of stereo tracks when mixing. Outside of that, I watched a few videos and cut a feature on Avid for a job, without even touching it beforehand. I always stayed on the keyboard in FC, and I find a lot of drag and drop Final Cut users have the hardest time learning Avid.

Oh yea, I miss being able to track forward to close a gap, but I understand why this can’t work with Avid trimming, and I’ll take the trim tools over what the other NLE’s have to offer any day of the week.

I’m not sure why people don’t use Avid FX for Titling over Marquee. It is very similar to AE and maybe even a cross between AE and Motion the way FX work on the timeline track. There is absolutely nothing you can’t do with text in Boris Red (Avid FX). As I learn it more. I’m finding that using it for compositing is also far greater in terms of flexibility and features then FC (legacy) as well.

Thats what I was pointing to. There are a lot of Vegas, Edius, Media 100 users that love their software and don’t need the collaborative features or toolsets that MC offers. But these aren’t really NLE’s that I would care to compare anyway. Since I cut narrative mostly, the trim tools mean a lot to me, which is why FCP 7 took the fun out of narrative editing for me personally, and from what I hear PP is inferior to FCP 7’s trim tools which really kills my interest right off the bat.

I do like the skim feature a lot. I can’t do without ganging though. I use it all the time. I need the source monitor.

Alban, when I say jobs is LA, I’m referring to Post houses mostly. I think X is probably a great tool for someone doing everything on their own. I’m going to start a new thread on the topic but the FCS 3 comparisons aren’t as relevant to me since the 2 other A’s had already implemented new technology and releases while FC users waited for a real update to FCS 2.

For me, its the fact that learning FCX isn’t going to make me any more marketable in LA. Avid users who knew FCS3 were very marketable. If you do your own events editing, then I think FCPX has everything you need. But I can’t see any decent paying job asking for FCPX editors in this city. For editors that can choose whichever platform they want (mainly people who shoot and edit their own projects) FCPX looks like a viable choice.

  • From what I’ve read the keyword collections are restricted to one computer though no?
