How about the opposite…is there any way to use reference movies from other apps like FCP, etc. in AE?

  • There’s a Tinderbox plug called BadTV and a DigiEffects one called Video Malfunction…it’s been a while so I don’t recall which one I prefer, but I think they both work pretty well and offer lots of options. Buena Software also has a related one called Digital Interference…it gives the look of a DV tape fast forwarding or breaking up. As with all of them, the same effect can also be done with AE’s own tools, but the plugs are definitely worth looking at if you have the budget.

  • Import PSDs as projects instead of footage and they’ll keep all layers in place. Importing PSDs with sets within them will make each set it’s own comp in AE, which is a handy way to organize an AE project before you even open AE. If your PSD layers have a lot of Photoshop effects/styles/blending modes, you’ll likley need to make rasterized copies of some layers to get what you need in AE.

I think there’s a way around that in AE 6.5 and/or PS CS, but I still do it that way and it’s ‘tickety boo’ indeed…except my ratios are 720×540 and 720×486.

  • Wiggling opcaity should work, but maybe try Glow and Strobe with a good electricity soundFX.

You can also download lots of free custom shapes for Photoshop at the Adobe Studio Exchange (https://share.studio.adobe.com/Default.asp). Haven’t been there in a while, but I know I’ve gotten plenty of leaf shapes there before.

I’m not disgareeing with Mylenium’s distinctions, but I personally prefer CRT for everything because I don’t like the fact that my images look different from every slightly different angle that i look at the monitor…especially things like color, contrast, etc. That said, I think it boils down to personal preference so get what you like. Just my 2 cents…hope it helps.

If you have more than one comp window open, the synchronize preference can really slow things down. If you’re gettingthe spinning beachball a lot, that pref could be the culprit. I use a G5 at work and W2K at home and the Mac seems to have more trouble with the synchronize pref than I was use to so it took me a while to figure out what the problem was.
