Is there any way for me to create a reference movie from AE (I make use of this a great deal when working with FCP). If anyone has any ideas (or work arounds) I would love to hear them.

    Kind Regards,

    Nope.

A reference movie is basically a bit of code that says “play this much of the original from here to here, then from here to here, and so on”. It works best with cuts-only movies. Presumably, the rendered scenes get played between the reference scenes.

AE renders every frame, always. It always makes a new, standalone movie.

How about the opposite…is there any way to use reference movies from other apps like FCP, etc. in AE?

I haven’t tried it. Why don’t you try importing one into AE, applying an effect, then rendering?

If it works, it can be done.
