September 4, 2010 at 1:02 am in reply to: suggestions for Mini DV deck “pro-sumer” is fineI just stumbled across this post from the Classifieds forum:

Sounds like a steal to me.

[Pascale Neuschafer]
“… specified uncompressed … I have a lot of graphics which are not going to look so great anymore.”I’m not sure what you mean here … graphics look great in any uncompressed codec since they’re, well, uncompressed.
[Pascale Neuschafer] “I have compressed it to 8-bit, the specification only said uncompressed quicktime. So I think my only option is going to be to print it to betacam tape.”
If they specified “uncompressed QuickTime”, they may not accept BetaSP tapes since a QuickTime file can’t go on a tape … you can master to tape a sequence of video that’s using an uncompressed 8-bit codec, but you can’t put a QuickTime file on a tape. So, the fact that they specified “QuickTime” sounds very much like they’re wanting a digital file.
They must have mentioned something about how they’ll accept the “uncompressed QuickTime” files they specifically ask for … DVD, hard drive, FTP, etc.? If so, you need to mention that part of the specifications to get full and accurate answers about the options.

If I understand your last post correctly, it sounds like that’s an error message that you’re getting … can’t tell because the color picker is covering the area where an expression may be shown, but especially since you mentioned this is a template you bought, it sounds like you have an expression that got screwed up somehow … did you change the name of a layer it refers to or something? If so, change it back.

Sounds like a keyframe interpolation issue … right click on the keyframes in question and try changing their interpolation method to linear. If that does eliminates the unwanted motion, it is an interpolation issue … you may have to reset the keyframes using linear interpolation, then change the interpolation to whatever you may want (bezier, etc.). Note, if I recall correctly, there’s a preferences setting that says something like “always make initial keyframe interpolation linear” … you may need that on, then change keyframe interpolation as needed.
Another thing to check is that you don’t have extra keyframes one frame apart from the ones you intend to have, which can happen easily and can be impossible to see without zooming all the way in.

Also, remember that all “uncompressed” video file are not created equal … is it 8-bit, 10-bit and did they specify codecs they’ll accept? If you can’t get it small enough to fit on a dual-layer DVD (about 8.5 Gb), you may have to consider either a fairly long digital transfer (FTP, etc.), if they even offer that option, or buying something like a 10-20 Gb flash drive to mail in. In any case, keep in mind it takes time to unzip or upload/download large files and you generally want to make accessing your entry as easy as possible for a festival that’s receiving hundreds or thousands of submissions.

I’m with Walter on both counts … “I don’t believe that this is possible to do” and “I’d contact Tiffen for support”.
The issue is that the Tiffen DFX bundle originated with a different company (Digital Film Tools) and was somewhat re-written during the transition. That’s typically the case when plugins are sold from one developer to another, which happens frequently and is the reason it’s always best to keep copies of old plugin versions you’ve used extensively. It’s generally far faster to just install an old plugin version to tweak an old project than it is to try to conform a new version to the old version settings.
You can probably find the old version available for download somewhere (maybe even DFT’s website). I have copies of all my old plugins going back to the early 90s so, if you can’t find it and you’ll mention exactly which version you need, I could probably send it to you (without my serial number, of course … you’ll have to use your own).

Why would you change text color via Hue/Saturation anyway? Why not just change the color of the text?

September 2, 2010 at 2:40 pm in reply to: suggestions for Mini DV deck “pro-sumer” is fineA friend of mine uses a Sony GV-HD700 for that purpose and swears by it. I think they retail around $1k, so you might be able to find a used one for half that or less. It’s an HDV deck that’s mini-DV compatible so that’ll give it longer life than a straight mini-DV deck.
BTW, personally, I hated every JVC deck I’ve ever had to use … just my two pence.

Well, when you asked “Would it be better done in Photoshop?”, you didn’t mention that you didn’t already own Photoshop. Although I think every video editor should own Photoshop and know it intimately, I’d always consider buying additional tools a last resort.
I’m not at my FCP machine today and don’t recall if I’ve ever brought PDFs directly into FCP, but you might try that first since, if FCP will read a PDF with alpha channel in-tact, you could follow all the same steps and do it all within FCP. I only suggested the Photoshop approach because it sounded like you already owned Photoshop and I consider that the easiest way to do what you want. Personally, I don’t like doing graphics in FCP, but that’s just my preference.

If I understand correctly what you’re trying to accomplish, you can import the PDF file into Photoshop (retaining the alpha channel), place it over a white background, add your black text, save as a PSD, bring the PSD into FCP and place it over your video in the timeline and you’re done.
