Where are you judging th quality of the output?

If on the computer screen, then you may be misjudging what will appear on a TV due to limitations in Premiere’s rendition of interlaced footage. Look at TV output before accepting that there is a quality problem.

If this is not the issue, then it would be helpful to eliminate it from consideration.

The download of DVdate is fully functional, but the overlay swaps at intervals between the ‘proper’ output and a watermark. Once registered, the watermark is removed.

So trying before buying gives you a full look at the capability of the product.

Anyway, it’s so cheap that excessive concern is probably not justified.

Hard to diagnose at a distance, so silly questions may intrude.

Such as…

Have you tried deleting all temp files for the project and re-building the previews?

Have you located your temp files (including conformed audio) away from the OS on a video-rated, defragged drive?

Are any of your files coming off an external drive?

Do you have a screensaver or other such interrupting software running in the background?

Do you have any polling peripherals (eg a scanner) that could be causing the interrupt?

Is your system networked?

Is your system connected to the Internet?

Have you tried running just on one processor?

If any of the above might be relevant, then tweaking your configuration may lead to a diagnosis.

If all your segments for export are the same length, it’s not too hard to set up the work area bar to cover the first such set of clips, export with ‘work area’ selected, move the work bar along to the next, export again etc. Probably no more work overall than setting up a batch list for the same operation.

Try the Color Pass effect. The SetUp screen available through the small icon beside the effect name in the Effects Control Window is probably the easiest way to set it up.

You might find it useful to have a browse through the on-line help pages on the different effects available in Premiere Pro. Start from Help/Contents, then Applying Effects, then Video Effects included with Premiere Pro.

If you have a camera with DV in enabled, there is a good chance that you can use the camera as an analogue/DV converter to get analogue material into the computer via DV.

Sony call the facility ‘passthrough’. Other manufacturers may call it something different.

For analogue in, connect the analogue input to the camera, the DV from camera to computer, and set passthrough to enable the link. No tape required.

For analogue out, play into the DV-in camera as if you were recording to DV tape and connect analogue outputs to TV/VCR. Again, you probably won’t need a tape in the camera for this to work.

The Color Balance (HLS) effect allows you to keyframe the saturation to manipulate color intensity using keyframes. Very easy to go to/from B&W in a single clip this way.

In my Windows-based copy of Premiere 6.0 there is no Export to Tape. Nor in my Premiere 5.1 or 6.5 either.

The Menu sequence to generate output to tape is File/Export Timeline/Print to Video. That brings up a box which invites you to set various parameters, including the amount of black before starting the programme. Having set the options, hitting OK starts the export process.

Maybe you don’t have the same version of Premiere 6 that I do?

Maybe you are not using this export method?

The other way to get out to tape is just to play the timeline and initiate recording at the camera end, but that makes getting a clean start at an insert point less easy.
