If what you want is the ability to capture analogue video, and you already have a DV video camera capable of DV-in, then you may be able to use that as a 2-way bridge to link analogue in/out to FireWire into the computer. Consult camera documentation about Passthrough (for Sony – may be called something different for others).

ALT-clicking the timeline clip audio opens a clip window with the waveform that can be expanded to help with precise edits of the audio.

Put your timeline sequence into another sequence and apply DVdate to the whole lot if you want timecode for the whole timeline.

The offset adjusts the start of the overlaid timeline timecode. From then on it displays the (‘real’ timecode plus the offset) number as the overlaid numerals.
It will be much more efficient if you download the trial version and see for yourself. If you like it, buy it. If not, then you’ll be back with AE and fixed overlays.

One way would be to create a sequence containing just the ramp to and from white and then place this on top at the point where you want the ‘transition’ in the main sequence.
By saving this in a separate project, you can import it for use in the future.

MP3 is not an editing format due to the way the compression is implemented. Avoid using it in your editing projects. Use WAV.

DVdate does indeed include the option to show timeline timecode. It’s the first option on the list on the opening screen. At the bottom of that list is a window where you can enter a timeline offset if you need one. What more might you need?

It would be worth trying a different FireWire cable.

Hard to guess what might be wrong, but one possibility is that the new audio files are in MP3 or other compressed format that is not well handled by Premiere. Worth checking that your ripper is generating WAV files with suitable parameters for use in Premiere.
Another possibility is (if you are using a non-Pro Premiere) that Premiere has defaulted to less than full quality on audio rate conversions (CD rips tend to be at 44.1, whilst DV is at 32 or 48k). If this might apply to you, check in the audio settings and set best rate conversion. This does not apply to Premiere Pro, which conforms all the audio before you can start editing.
