“Can’t activate recorder, try resetting the camera”
Posted by Helgi Johannsson on August 13, 2005 at 10:59 amHi,
I used to import in Premiere Pro 1.5 without trouble, but then all the sudden I get this when I go to capture:
“Can’t activate recorder, try resetting the camera”I’ve tried connecting multiple cameras to my computer(PD150, PD170, XL1, XM2 and more) but nothing seems to work. The computer recognizes the cameras when I connect them with a firewire and I can for example use the cameras to connect AE with a monitor, but still Premiere does this to me. Why?
Someone got a clue what I can do?

August 13, 2005 at 11:15 amAnd as I said, the Computer itself hasn’t got any problem finding the camera once I plug it in the FireWire, and After Effects also finds it. But it seems as Premiere doesn’t.

August 13, 2005 at 11:27 amDo you have any other firewire devices attached to the PC?
Is your Project Preset DV- NTSC? Is the Capture Format (Project settings) DV/IEEE 1394 capture? -

August 13, 2005 at 11:28 amDo you have another app running that is connected to the firewire circuit?

August 13, 2005 at 2:34 pmWell, sometimes and sometimes not, I use it with After Effects sometimes, but it doesn’t make a difference, the problem persists even if I close AE and only run Premiere.
“Is your Project Preset DV- NTSC? Is the Capture Format (Project settings) DV/IEEE 1394 capture? ”
Yes, that is the Capture Format, and my preset is DV-Pal (located in Europe, so)
Still haven’t found a solution… But badly need.

October 5, 2005 at 8:09 pmI’m having the same problem. Adobe advises this is due to installed 3rd party codecs or audio cards. Noe of which apply in my case. Just cannot capture! Makes the Premiere nearly useless.
Did you find a solution?

October 5, 2005 at 8:48 pmIf capturing in Premiere is a problem, worth trying Scenalyzer. http://www.scenalyzer.com – try before buy available.

October 6, 2005 at 5:39 pmOK. My problem was that somehow the base DV Video Encoder/Decoder was not registered. Somehow my registry was overwritten and buggered.
The solution, for me, was to download a utility called GSpot (https://www.headbands.com/gspot) to identify the un-registered codec.
In my case it was the DV Video Decoder and DV Video Encoder. Figuring out which dll this referred to was problematic but having a colleague run GSpot on his system gave me a clue since it identified the file associated with the codec. In this case qdv.dll.
Then I went to the Start menu and selected Run then typed “regsvr32 qdv.dll”.
Immediately Premiere recognized the capture device and problem solved.

August 13, 2009 at 10:53 pmHELP….Adobe has been all but worthless in helping solve this issue. My installation of Premiere Pro CS4 had been working perfectly. I hadnt worked with it for a couple of months then tried to start the application. When starting the application it errored and would not even run. Adobe’s solution was uninstall and re-install the application which I did. THe application now runs, but when I go to capture video from my Cannon HV30 camcorder I get the exact message that you are describing. After 4 hours working with Adobe they finally directed me to this bolg.
What causes this problem….and how do you fix it? I tried your START..RUN…regsvr32 qdv.dll and no luck.
Any Help would be appreciated.
