AND if this is something that just starting happening, check to see if you have a bad memory chip. Went through weeks of problems of the system freezing and or quitting during a render. Problem got continually worse until I couldn’t even render a 15 second piece. Come to find out 2 of my 4 1GB memory chips were bad. Replaced the memory and now (knock on wood, I just did it this afternoon) FCP is rendering without a problem.

I suggest importing EX footage into FCP using the Log and Transfer utility: https://www.sony.ca/xdcamex/software.htm

My workflow is I shoot in the field and transfer to a laptop (using the XDCAM EX Clip Browser with the “Perform CRC check after copy” enabled – {under the Tool(T) options} )

I then copy it onto an external HD when back at the office (again using CRC check). I also back up to data DVDs as a safety backup.

If you use the Log and Transfer utility you can set in and out points and name all the clips you are importing into FCP. You can also do this in the Sony Clip Transfer software. But, by using Log and Transfer, when you open a project and the media has been removed from your system, you can use “reconnect media” to import it again. It will ask you to mount the SxS folder it came from. It’s like using tapes. This was my big complaint about using the EX-1, how to re-import footage for a re-edit. By using the Log and Transfer utility, it takes care of that.

I shoot with the EX1.
I dump the cards to a laptop using the Sony XDCAM Browser software.
I then transfer from the laptop to an external HD when I get back to the office. I store all my footage on the external HD and make DVD backup copies of the files.

I now use the new Log and Transfer software for FCP (I’m running 6.0.4). By using this Log and Transfer software it treats the SxS folders just like it would a tape. You do all your logging then transfer the shots into FCP. If you delete the media and re-open the project, FCP will show you the missing clips. When you do a “reconnect media” you can do a “batch capture” and the media files will be transferred from the external HD (just like if you were using tapes).

I saw a Walter Biscardi post about this Log and Transfer software last month. It was just what I was looking for. Now I can treat my SxS folders just like I treated by BetaSP tapes. I log and file them all, keeping track of where they are. Then when FCP asks for a folder, I know what external HD to hook up.

10 Years! Piece of cake.
I’m on year 24 of my own business. Fortunately, economy hasn’t been a problem yet. Most of my clients are long-term repeat ones. Right now I have more work than I need. Let’s hope that keeps up for the new year.

I’m in a small market. Price is always a problem. New people with no experience and no or little “overhead” will always be around. I’ve learned to try and ignore them. Wish them well. I find business people appreciate this attitude. And, what does it matter, you can’t control it anyway, so take the high road. My line is “the more people using video, the better for me in the long run!”

Won’t kid you though. Lost lots of sleep in my early years worrying about anyone and everyone. Maybe getting older has helped. Started my own business at 25 and am now 49.

Nothing beats working for yourself and setting your own hours. Have never missed one of my 4 kids sporting events. This year will be a grandfather and hope to never miss any of the next generations either.

But I’m off topic now.

MY BAD!

My file (the wrong aspect ratio) finally finished compressing. When I set up the next job to test the 16×9 setting, I checked in the Batch Monitor and the process WAS listed there. So when I looked the last time I must have not clicked on “This Computer” or there was some other reason the jobs weren’t listed there.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for your replies. It’s only the 2nd time I’ve used the Droplets on the desktop instead of opening Compressor, so I was a little confused.

I looked in Batch Monitor. It is not there, since I didn’t submit it through Compressor’s interface, but through a droplet on the desktop.

I believe I did restart the MAC. Since it is working in the background, the job continues once the MAC is restarted. (or I believe that is what happened)

Checked the Apple Support site and discovered it was a problem with 3rd party RAM. Took out the extra 4 GB of RAM and installation was successful.

I have the same deck. I think having “REF” video and the rolling black line are 2 different things. I think your problem with the rolling black line is you are trying to monitor the COMPONENT INPUT by using the COMPOSITE out to a monitor? Yes?

My understanding was the reason the black line was there was because I didn’t have a component monitor.

When I record a COMPOSITE INPUT I don’t get that rolling black line. I get it just when I’m recording a COMPONENT Input.

My thoughts, for what they are worth.

This happened to me just yesterday. Out to Motion, then when I got back into FCP got the same error message. Project wouldn’t save. FCP then crashed.
Once I trashed preferences and restarted FCP I was able to open the project again.

Did you trash preferences? When I run into problems I don’t understand I… 1.) reboot 2.) trash preferences 3.) repair permissions.

9 times out of 10 that usually works for me.
