I would avoid using send to compressor in general. Instead export self-contained with current settings and bring that file into compressor. Although many people advise against unchecking “self-contained” to export a reference movie, I never had a problem. But I only used reference movies as one-time-use-only files specifically for immediately opening in compressor to compress. I liked it because its a fast export and small file size. I really miss my reference movies now that FCPX and I are exclusive. 🙁

Have you looked at the WD Red drives? I’m curious about them myself and wonder if anyone here has any experience with them.

There’s also the issue of trying to work with 40 tracks of video stacked up. You could build it in several sections with just a few of the clips each, then export each section and bring the new files back in to put it all together.

I have no idea what was going on, but I would reccommend that before opening FCPX and importing clips, you copy the entire file structure from the card to your media drive and eject the card. Import clips from the backed-up files on your hard drive.

In my opinion your first course of action should be to do a clean install. Buy a 128GB SSD, like a Crucial M4, for about $100 (plus a 2.5″ to 3.5″ drive adapter for $30ish I think). Keep your current system drive on the shelf so you can switch back to it at any time. Install your OS and the trials of FCPX an Adobe and try them out. As John said, FCPX has been drastically improved since release, it’s happily running on my 2008 8-core Mac Pro with Radeon 5770 and 16 GB RAM and recently has become my only NLE currently installed. After really getting familiar with FCPX, I think it’s great.
Being your first clean install since new, (was that 2007?) it’s inevitable that you’ll need stuff from that drive (I keep a folder backed up with the installers/files for all my OS/Apps/Plug-ins/Layouts/Settings so clean installs are not too much hassle, I’m an overly obsessive clean-installer). With this new drive you can play around and figure out where you really want to go when you eventually purchase a new computer, without the worry of messing with your current working system drive. I know 128GB seems really small but with just OS and Apps, you can probably get away with a lot less drive space than you think. You just might find that the FCPX “suite” is all you need, it works for me but YMMV.

Yes and they do a good job (still a big loss in quality from original) but the point is to help the OP within the realm of his equipment. If I understand, he wants to know how to take an HD video edited in FCP, use Compressor and DVDSP to make a DVD without losing quality. Well, there is no way to do that. Your intitial suggestions may do a significantly better job than Compressor, I don’t know. But no matter what, with the tools at hand, and the end product being DVD, it will not be HD and there will be a major loss in quality from what he was seeing in his NLE. Blu-ray is HD and not all that difficult or expensive to do.

Yeah Hollywood can do a good job but that’s big budget and DVD Replication, this is DVD-r and compressor. Of course the Hollywood DVDs still lose a lot of quality compared to the original. My point being that in order for our friend here to really appreciate the HD quality of his video when played back on a set top player, it will have to be Blu-ray. He asked how to do it without losing any quality, that simply IS NOT POSSIBLE.
