  • How to roll trim on second video track?

Posted by Sum Choi on December 28, 2012 at 8:14 am

I have no problems roll trimming on the first video track but if I have a second video track on top of another, I only have the option to ripple trim and not the roll. Why is that?

One of the top results of a google search for “fcpx roll edit secondary”-

Basically you need to have both clips in a secondary storyline. Check out some of the many many free training videos for FCPX to get a handle on these basic operations, here’s a start- https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL607BE2B2BFE9BE1A

    RE: “Why is that?”

I suspect it is because the two clips aren’t part of the same secondary (connected) video track.

Do they both have that ‘shelf’ that spans both clips and so both clips have ONE connection to the primary storyline? If not, then ‘bump’ one into the other by holding the ‘G’ key so that both clips have a common shelf. Now you can Roll the edit between the two clips.
