Try looking for ‘0k’ sized frames in the finder and check that you have no missing numbers in your sequence? That might help.

I’ve changed my expose and dashboard settings so that they are ‘apple+F12 etc’
Seems to solve all of the conflicts I have come across so far.

I did this recently using a cheap mixer (the soundcraft notepad)

send your audio from your deck into 1 channel, the audio from your mac into the second channel and the output from the mixer to you speakers.
Works great! AND you can adjust the volumes of both independantly.

Zoom to pointer NOT selected clip!! PLEASE!!!

Another thing which is better on Avid IMHO is the fact that, if I mark in and out on the timline and hit lift (delete), it deletes the section that I have between the in and out NOT the bloody clip I left selected further down the timeline which I cannot see because I’m zoomed in. The amount of times I’ve lost a clip from an edit because of this daft way of working I can’t bare to think about.

You can scroll when playing by holding down the shift key and using the mouse wheel. (not at my system at the moment but if it’s not shift it’s either control or option.) Realtime playback and a kind of scrol option for you.

I have found that images sequences run smoother on lower spec machines.
Png’s seem to work well for me.

I suppose it might be me willing the machine to go faster that’s causing it!

I have to back up the 2 week claim:

After 7 years on Avid I bought an FCP system and dived in without even a wetsuit!
2 weeks later I was cutting fine. Yeah I still had to think now and then about where stuff was but that’s to be expected.

I’ve been cutting on FCP for about 6 months now and have just gone to a place that uses avid… What a difference. I now cut quicker and more efficiently on fCP than I ever did on an avid. This is partially due to the fact that I read someones comment that said ‘DO NOT CUSTOMISE THE FCP KEYBOARD!’. Best piece of advice ever!!! As an Avid user, I had a highly customised keyboard layout but on FCP I use the basic layout and it’s fantastic.

There are a few niggles about FCP which everyone mentions: average media manager, the desperate need for ‘sequence decompose’ feature (Please add this in Apple!) but on the whole it’s spot on.

Read the books and hunt the web by all means but my advice would be to dive in and then read up on sections as you need to or when you get time.

Just a thought but I always learn a piece of software much faster when I have to…. obviously I don’t have a client with me at the time!
