Well whodathunk it…

AJA support suggested I’d connected the umbilical cable on upside down and low and behold I had.
I didn’t think you could connect cables on upside down these days without bending pins but you can.

The strange thing was that even with the connector on upside down I got a perfect video output. Bizarre!

For reference, incase anyone else has this issue, the cable connector has ‘AJA’ printed on the topside.

More haste, less speed.

I’ve been through the Lhi control panel but the only audio output options I can see are in the ‘setup’ menu and are ‘Lock audio gain to utility’ (which is ticked) and then ‘analog audio monitor level’ (which is set to -18dbu FSD’.

I get this problem when network rendering PNG’s.
It seems to be cause by 2 machines (or instances – as in NPro) trying to write the same frame at the same time.

From what I can gather, a PNG file is not written UNTIL the file has been partially rendered. JPEGS etc seem to write a holding 0k file so that other machines cannot pick up that same frame to render.

Try rendering as TGA’s with NLE compression (Lossless compression – works like a .zip file).
That worked for us. Or turn off NPro whilst rendering.

It would seem that esata RAID 5 is not possible at the moment BUT that the Lacie Biggest Quadra does RAID 5 through FW800. Or am I REALLY confused? Raid 5 on FW800 would protect me for now is that’s the case.

I have to say that I would prefer the G-Tech as I have a G-Raid 2 and apart from some strange noises at the start (bearings in the fan I think) it’s been solid and the build quality is fabulous. However, if RAID 5 is built in on the Lacie then that’s what I’m forced to buy becuase i need that redundancy.

And yes I realise that I’m this weeks ‘I want this brilliant device but can’t afford it…. Tell me about a cheaper solution that does the same thing’ person, so don’t flame too hard 🙂

Thanks the reply.

I already own FCP6 but the facility where we were onlining has pulled out. Consequently we have to online at a facility that is not happy about upgrading yet (they’ve had some problems with 6), so I need to downgrade my sequence.

I’ll have to check my onlined sequence like a hawk as I have DVCAM timecode slippage (from a dodgy dub machine – I’ll murder the Producer who thought that the timecode NOT matching the BITC would be ok to edit/conform with!!!) – Up to 7 seconds slippage on one tape over 40 minutes!
So I’ll reconform with 10 second handles and then slip the footage back to where it should be.

Long and drawnout for an online but that’s the way the cookie crumbles sometimes!

Bizarrely I did try that but it would not let me change the timecode. One restart later and all is well again.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Andy – those drive look pretty good. I’ll see if I can get them in the UK.

Also, I said FW and USB powered as I have used passport drives before (USB only) that have needed power prom 2 usb ports to keep up the data rate. I was just backing data up to them but they kept failing unless I had 2 usb powered ports pluged in – 1 into the usb on the drive and the other from USB to the power socket on the drive – This might not be the case with FW though.
