If I remember correctly, according to the ASC, [shooting @24fps] an object should take AT LEAST 8 seconds to pass from frame edge to frame edge during a pan.

I have the Sanken and Sonotrims (Trams). I use the Sanken’s for hiding ALL the time. I also use the rubber mount with a piece of Top Stick; works great! They also sound like a boom mic! Great for matching with shotgun and condenser mics.

Hi Nicole,

You have a a couple different issues here:

1. h.264 (as I understand it) is not an editable codec and should be converted.
2. Timecode can certainly be recorded on an audio file. Just FYI: if the recorder has a dropframe/non-dropframe setting, it’s recording timecode.
3. Use Compressor to up or down convert. It works wonderfully.
4. Converting the .WAV to AIFF was the right thing to do as, FCP doesn’t like .WAV files.

I’m in Michigan…lots of mixers and not a lot of work 🙂

Anyway, I was referring to working on a film with little to no budget. I have to believe there are guys out there who would be willing to work on something like that for at least a nominal fee (plus food!). Of course, as I indicated they’re probably not going to be the cream of the crop.

You can hire a professional sound guy (to work on an indi film) for around $150/day. They might not be the most experienced mixers but, they’re are a lot of people out there looking for work; and they should come with enough gear and experience to get you the quality you want.

That said: Anything by Sound Devices is tops; the 302 is perfect. If you can’t afford new, look for used. As far as the recorders, I haven’t used these. Before you make a purchase, seriously look at used gear, ether through places like Trew Audio, Location Sound, Topham and others or on Ebay.

HIRE A SOUND GUY! I couldn’t say that enough. Someone will have to run sound anyway, why not someone who knows what they’re doing. Sound is half your movie, and is AS important as the picture. You want to get it right during production.

You’re gonna need to add a pad! Shotgun mics are not made to handle the high sound pressure levels of an amplified band. You’ll get distorted, unusable audio. -10 or -20 will work.
