I’ve only ever used it once (and I wasn’t the DP) but, we didn’t have this issue.

What type and brand of SSD were you using? I have heard of issues the camera has when not using certain brands of drives. Have you had any issues with the footage so far?

Yes, we used it with the 480, shooting 2.5K RAW. We didn’t quite fill the drive and I wasn’t the one transferring the data but, I believe it took about 30 minutes for around 50 minutes of footage. But I could be wrong 🙂

We used the EF one with a few different lenses from DSLR’s which looked great. I wasn’t the DP and I can’t remember all the ones he had except for the Canon Fish Eye here https://www.borrowlenses.com/product/canon_fish/Canon_EF_8_15mm_L We used it most of the time.

Hopefully someone who knows more than I about EF vs. MFT.

I would recommend getting a cage, top handle, battery mount that takes Anton Baurer Batteries and 2-3 batteries. Also you’ll want a small external monitor, as opposed to using the BMCC screen. The screen isn’t bright enough in daylight and you’ll see mostly your own reflection in it.

Of course all this will set you back another 1 to 2K, but all necessary in my opinion.

We used the SanDisk 480GB which is one (I believe) that’s recommended by BMCC.

As I understand it, there has been issues with the camera dropping frames during recording. We never had this problem, as far as I know with the 480. But the thing to watch is if the record light flashes during recording. If it does, the camera is dropping frames. Always check everything you record in field BEFORE packing up! Better safe than sorry!

Yes, again to the COS11’s. Place it just above mid-chest level. As was said, don’t bury it (or any lav) too much. Use the rubber mount with it, too.

I have this battery mount from View Factor https://www.viewfactor.net/products/blackmagic/bmc-ab-power-hinge.html. And during my last shoot with the BMCC used their cage, rods and top handle along with the Redrock Mattebox & follow focus (Redrock also makes all or most of the other items, too).

As far as memory I used the SandDisk Extreme SSD 480GB.

You’ll also want to get an external monitor; the one on the back of the BMCC is almost useless as a field monitor; it’s VERY reflective and somewhat dark).

On thing to note about the BMCC: it doesn’t have any built-in filters like neutral density so, you’ll want to buy or rent a set if you’re doing anything outside.

In my opinion, the BMCC is really more of a professional production camera. The BMCC records internally in ProRes 442HQ and RAW uncompressed; the two highest quality codecs available. The Sony nex vg 900 has internal compression rate is 28Mbps though, you can run uncompressed 1080p out via the HDMI output.

In ether case, be prepared to spend money on all the extras you’ll need or want; case, lenses & light control, like filters, mattebox, flag; batteries, mounts and/or cages, especially with the BMCC.

  • We shot last month on a BMCC rental (@2.5K RAW) and the same sandisk 480 and didn’t have any dropped frames (as far as I know…lol).

Sorry to hear about your experience.
