    Greetings Everyone,

It’s been a while since I’ve been on here, but good to be back. Question regarding the Coles Lip Mic: I just acquired one and began testing it with a couple of different mixers. I know it’s a ribbon mic, but it seems like I’m getting very little signal (or sound) from it regardless of the mixer I’m using. I have to have the gain almost all the way up as well as the trim well above unity and even so, the meters barely react. Maybe I’m completely missing something, or maybe I have a faulty mic?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Ribbon mics have very low output compared to condenser mics. While some mixers may have sufficient input gain for ribbon mics, many do not. You need a device like a Cloudlifter which is an inline very clean preamp that uses phantom power to provide the extra gain you need.

    Welcome back, David,
Mr. Fishback is correct with a few exceptions. The Audio-Technica AT 8040 ribbon mic, which uses Phantom Power to enable an onboard amp, is several dB more sensitive than an AKG C414 condenser mic. Here’s my review from some years ago.
