Let me add that, FCP7 IS a professional system that Hollywood movies are edited on. As Scott said, you need to change your settings. I’m currently editing a doc on FPC7 with footage shot on film and transferred to ProRes 442HQ. That’s what my timeline is set to as well.

As far as what camera to buy or use, well, this can depend on what your final destination is going to be. This is where larger frame sensors matter. If you’re projecting on a movie screen, than you’d benefit from a 35mm sensor. If it’s for broadcast TV, than something in the 1/2 to 3/4 chip size would do. For internet, probably a pro-sumer camera with a 1/3 or smaller size imager will suffice. Again, as Scott said, there are a lot of other factors that can determine image quality, including lens quality, compression rate, and resolution.

I bought two 50′ xlr’s from b&h and one or both were bad. However, I sent them to the manufacture (Audio Technica) and they sent me two new ones. It was a manufacture issue.

Hi Luis,

I would echo what Ty recommends. Not sure what your budget is, but even if you just get a mixer, pole and boom mic, I would be ready to spend close to if not more than $1,000. In fact, the 302 mixer, alone, is over $1,000. There are less expensive ways to go like, if you can find used items.

Hi Zohra,

Noah is right, that stuff will cost you A LOT more than $2,000…even used!

And while you can figure out how to use the equipment, you may not know how to record good sound. Let me present some problems you’ll run into: various hums and noises, RF interference, echo, low-end rumble (if you don’t know what to listen for on this one, than you may not realize you’re recording it until you get back in post by which time, it’s too late to fix it!). The question is, do you know how to handle each of these issues? If not, than AT LEAST a crash course is in order, if not outright hiring someone who can deal with, and eliminate each one of these problems as they occur.

Hi Mike,

When it comes to mics you really get what you pay for. A $1,000 mic will work that much better than a $300 one. Meaning, it will be more sensitive and have a longer reach.
