Do people here feel safe buying used mics?
Posted by Noam Osband on July 22, 2011 at 12:05 amWhen it comes to gear, I usually buy new electronics and used for something mechanical like a tripod. I’m looking for a shotgun, and dont mind paying more for a gun I can use for many, many years. I’m thinking of the NTG-3 or the MKH-416.
I found a used MKH-416 on B&H and am considering it. That said, I am a bit wigged out over buying used electronics for the long haul. Thoughts?

July 22, 2011 at 12:48 amDon’t be wigged out. I’ve bought all of my top line mics used. B&H should have some kind of testing period & or warrenty. Buy the mic and don’t sweat it.

July 22, 2011 at 12:50 amB&H is a pretty reliable store. Did they say if there was anything wrong with the mic since it is under the “used” items? I assume that they offer a refund or return with used stuff.
I have had a 90% approval rating with them. The only thing that I had a problem with from them is there brand of XLR’s keep cutting out on me.

July 22, 2011 at 12:57 amIt’s the soldering in the XLR connector that causes the cutting out. Buy Canare cable & Neutrik connectors and build your own if you know how to solder.

July 22, 2011 at 1:26 amCould be a break internally but who knows? Run a continuity test with a multi-meter and see if the pin to pin wiring is the same on both ends. See if you can return it for a replacement if required.

July 22, 2011 at 3:43 amI assume you mean all 4 from B&H? I find that hard to believe. Have you tried any of the suspect cables in another system. Have you tried an xlr cable not from B&H? Would you explain the setup you’re using that’s causing you problems? Perhap’s it’s not the cable but some interconnect or settings issue.

July 22, 2011 at 6:26 pmI bought two 50′ xlr’s from b&h and one or both were bad. However, I sent them to the manufacture (Audio Technica) and they sent me two new ones. It was a manufacture issue.
