Two masks will work, probably more flexible.
But the question approaches masking incorrectly. You’re not masking out three dimensional objects when rotoscoping. You are simply drawing a line around the shape of the entire thing you are masking.bogiesan

Glad you got an acceptable result and I want to say thanks for closing your thread with a solution. Hardly anyone does that around here.
Don’t take this personally but chromakeying does not depend upon upon only one tool. Your ReflecMedia background is a fabulous tool but it’s useless if you don’t have the chroma bandwidth and pixel resolution to make the keying software happy. keying through diaphanous materials such as smoke, shadows, water, or veils requires testing and usually some modifications to the set or costumes to work with the available technologies instead of trying to fix it in post.
Your thread, unfortunately, is a textbook example of almost everything we try to get folks to do BEFORE they commit to shooting for chromakeying.

You’re in over your head.
Attempting to create the effect you are describing at your current level of experience is impossible without buy a prepackaged effects project. but you’d still need to understand how to make adjustments and elegance to suit your needs.
spend a few days watching tutorials and playing with the filters. You will either slap your head with the realization of how this works or you will smash you head against the wall in frustration.I hope you, too, get to have the epiphany others have experienced, it’s a good rush, but, man, I gotta tell you, After Effects is hard.

Keylight is a chromakeyer. You want to use one of the linear keyers since black has little o no chroma information.

Motion’s performance is mostly not about RAM and your research is contradictory to what all of our brains tell us should be happening.
The card will give you the most muscle for this rev of Motion and this OS. But no one knows what Snow Leopard and Motion 4 might be able to do when they show up in the same machine.Buy all the RAM you can afford, I suppose, but don’t expect miracles with Motion.
